The Stormers have secured the future of Springboks sensation André-Hugo Venter, who has inked a new deal to stay with the United Rugby Championship side until 2029. Venter, a relentless hooker and son of Springboks legend Andre Venter, has been a pillar in the Cape Town squad since his debut in 2020, and his commitment is a major coup for the club’s long-term ambitions.

At just 24, Venter has notched 77 appearances and was pivotal in the Stormers' triumph in the inaugural URC championship back in 2022. His growth from a promising talent to a key player is underscored by his debut and sole Test for the Springboks in 2024, where he made an immediate impact by scoring a try against Portugal.

The Stormers are not just keeping a talented player, but a fierce competitor. Director of Rugby, John Dobson, highlighted the strategic importance of Venter’s extension, stating,

“André-Hugo made his senior debut at a very young age and it was not long before he was a fixture in the squad. The fact that he has committed long-term shows the type of person that he is and is testament to the positive environment we have here.”

Dobson also praised Venter’s drive and mindset, adding,

“He is competitive in everything he does and is very ambitious, which makes him the perfect fit for our team. He will contribute greatly to what we aim to achieve in the coming years.”

These comments not only emphasize Venter’s skills on the field but also his role in fostering a winning culture at the Stormers.

With his future now secured, Venter is focusing on further elevating his game and supporting the Stormers' ambitions. Expressing his commitment, Venter stated, “This is a great team to play for and I have felt right at home since the day I started. I know that I will continue to grow in this environment and I want to keep challenging myself in that regard. I would like to thank everyone here who has played a role in my journey so far. I am incredibly thankful for everything I have learned, and excited to keep learning and improving as a player for this club.”

Venter’s enthusiasm for the Stormers’ future is palpable as he embraces the club’s Project 2029, “It is very exciting to be a part of Project 2029, I really believe in what the management have planned for this squad and look forward to us reaching even greater heights together in the future.” With Venter locked in, the Stormers are clearly shaping up to be a formidable force in the years to come.
