When the Springboks face France this weekend, they'll be sporting their alternative white jerseys instead of their iconic Green and Gold. This shift comes as World Rugby has implemented a new policy to aid color-blind fans by requiring teams to wear ‘light’ or ‘dark’ kits to avoid color clashes, a policy now embraced in the Six Nations’ competitions.

Color blindness affects an estimated 300 million people globally, making it crucial for sports to be accessible to all spectators. This condition has even touched figures like former World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont, influencing the push for these inclusive guidelines. With the frequency of red/green color blindness, these changes aim to simplify the viewing experience for a significant portion of the audience.

"While SA Rugby supports World Rugby’s ambition to make rugby as inclusive as possible, we have serious reservations about the potential impacts the application of the color-blindness regulations may have,"

stated Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby.

Oberholzer elaborated on the complexities of the issue, highlighting the balance between tradition and inclusivity. He expressed concerns over the loss of traditional colors which could alienate the majority who are not color-blind. Despite these concerns, the Springboks will comply with the guidelines during their upcoming matches, including their game against Italy, where they're expected to wear their white kit again.

Interestingly, when the Springboks hosted Ireland in 2021, they opted for their alternate kit to avoid a color clash, showcasing their occasional flexibility with these guidelines. As the Springboks continue navigating these regulations, it remains to be seen how often fans will see their team in the storied Green and Gold.

As the rugby world strives to balance tradition with inclusivity, the debate continues. The impact on long-standing team identities and fan experiences is a topic of ongoing discussion, underscoring the complexities of modernizing sports while honoring their histories.
