As the 2025 international rugby season wraps up, the Springboks will sport their alternative white jerseys against Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. This shift from their iconic green and gold is in line with a World Rugby guideline designed to aid color blind fans, ensuring the game is more accessible and enjoyable for all spectators.

Throughout November, the South African team has frequently donned the white kit with green trim. While they returned to their traditional attire against Ireland—who also switched to white in observance of the old custom where the home team changes—the upcoming match in Cardiff sees them in white once again. This decision stems from a World Rugby initiative aimed at minimizing kit clashes for the benefit of color blind viewers, impacting some 300 million people globally, including individuals like former World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont.

The guideline, while not enforced outside World Rugby-run competitions, has been adopted by events such as the Six Nations and Quilter Nations Series. This shift aligns rugby more closely with football, where the home team wears their first-choice colors and visitors change to prevent clashes.

"While SA Rugby supports World Rugby’s ambition to make rugby as inclusive as possible, we have serious reservations about the potential impacts the application of the colour-blindness regulations may have and believe they need further interrogation,"

SA Rugby chief executive Rian Oberholzer expressed in 2023.

Oberholzer elaborated on concerns that the new guidelines could dilute the historical significance and brand equity of traditional team colors.

"If only one person watching on the sidelines of the school field is having trouble following some elements of the game due to an avoidable kit clash, then rugby is letting them down,"

he added, highlighting the balance that needs to be struck between inclusivity and preserving tradition.

While the regulations are set to make the sport more accessible, they have stirred debate about the preservation of rugby traditions. The upcoming matches in the Greatest Rivalry Tour and other international fixtures under the SANZAAR will continue to feature teams in their primary colors, including the anticipated face-off between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

This ongoing dialogue between national rugby boards and World Rugby underscores the complex interplay between evolving sports practices and the cherished traditions that define team identities globally.
