Just when you thought your job was secure because you'd barely unpacked your desk toys, Steve Diamond has been given the boot as Newcastle Red Bulls' director of rugby after a single game in the new English Premiership season. Yep, you read that right—one game! Talk about a fleeting tenure. Diamond, who stepped into the role in January 2024, presided over a less-than-stellar record, securing only two wins out of 25 matches. His final curtain call was a 39-17 thumping by Saracens last Friday at Kingston Park.

In a parting salute, the club issued a statement expressing gratitude towards Diamond for his "passion, contribution and guidance during what they described as an important transitional period." Translational as it was, it seems Red Bull’s patience ran thinner than their win margin.

"We want to thank Steve for his commitment and efforts. He has been an integral part during this transitional phase,"

the club stated, no doubt trying to put a positive spin on a grim situation.

Not ones to waste time, Red Bull already has a game plan post-Diamond. Starting November 1, Neil McIlroy, a veteran from Clermont and Catalans Dragons, will take over as the sporting general manager. This means head coach Alan Dickens will have a new boss to report to. The restructuring doesn’t stop there. The pathways for academy and youth development will soon be under the guidance of John Fletcher, starting December 1.

Moreover, Jonny Petrie, who knows a thing or two about managing from his days with Ulster and Edinburgh, is set to revamp the off-field operations as the new managing director from October 6. And if all that wasn’t enough, December will see the arrival of ex-England wing Christian Wade, hopefully injecting some much-needed pep into their step.

The Red Bulls are evidently keen to shake off their rocky start, with their next Premiership challenge being a trip to face the Exeter Chiefs on Saturday. With all these changes, fans will be hoping for a turnaround quicker than their management swaps. Fingers crossed, and maybe a little rugby magic, could see the Red Bulls charging rather than limping into the season.
