Just when you thought the Stormers could catch a break, fate throws a wrench—or rather, a toe injury—into the works. Captain Salmaan Moerat, a key player for the team, is staring down a six-month recovery after a big toe ligament tear that demands surgery. This blow came right after his entry in a tough 30-19 loss to the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium, where he also picked up a yellow card for his team’s repeated fouls.

The timing couldn’t be worse, as Moerat’s rugby boots will now be gathering dust during the Nations Championship matches against top contenders like England, Scotland, and Wales this July. His chances for Springbok selection are, to put it mildly, looking pretty grim.

The Stormers are no strangers to injury woes, often pointing fingers at the notorious Cape Town Stadium pitch. The same field has been blamed for everything from turf toe to more severe abrasions and infections. Coach John Dobson didn’t mince words about the pitch conditions, which seem to have become a recurring nightmare for the team.

"He landed on a bare patch, split his knee open and it got infected. The doctors have put it directly down to the condition of the field,"

Dobson explained, sharing the gritty details of another player, Adre Smith's, injury saga. Smith is back in training after a knee injury and subsequent infection that had him in the hospital for days.

The coach also highlighted an uptick in injuries like turf toe and other abrasion-related issues due to the hybrid pitch.

"We were promised a world-class pitch, and we don’t have one,"

Dobson lamented, underscoring the disconnect between what was promised and the harsh reality.

Despite the pitch woes, the Stormers are trying to keep their spirits up and their game faces on. Meanwhile, Cape Town Stadium officials maintain that the field is up to World Rugby standards. However, with the Stormers' list of injuries lengthening, one has to wonder if a "standard" is all that's needed or if it's time for a serious turf overhaul. As for the Stormers, they’re likely gearing up for a no-holds-barred comeback, hoping to leave no stone—or perhaps no blade of grass—unturned in their quest for a safer playing surface.
