As the Stormers prepare to enter the fiery arena of Loftus Versfeld, attack coach Dawie Snyman is placing his bets on the seasoned pros in the lineup. The team is set to welcome back the experienced quartet of Neethling Fouché, Deon Fourie, Damian Willemse, and Ruhan Nel, with Nel stepping up as captain for the clash against the Bulls in the upcoming Vodacom URC face-off.

“I think it’s massive,” Snyman remarked on the return of these key players. “Those guys are natural leaders. They don’t only lead by talking to the players, they lead by example. You could already feel their presence in the squad this week. They’ve played a lot of these types of games, so it’s great to have them available.”

“Just the experience he brings in a game like this is huge,”

Despite not being expected to last the full 80 minutes, Fourie’s early presence could prove pivotal. Snyman explained, “We want him to start hard and lead in those opening exchanges, when it’s going to be a bit hard and heavy, and let’s see how far he can push himself.” Ready to take over from Fourie is Paul de Villiers, who will be waiting on the bench.

The strategic placement of Willemse and Nel alongside flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is another boost for the Stormers, with Snyman praising their abilities. “Damian is a phenomenal rugby player and a great thinker of the game,” he said. “Ruhan brings a lot of confidence and experience. It’s not just with ball in hand, but also his organisation without the ball, especially on defence.”

The Stormers are gearing up for a tough battle against a Bulls team that has recently secured significant victories over the Lions and Sharks, climbing to eighth on the URC log. Meanwhile, the Stormers have slipped from first to fifth after three consecutive losses.

“The Bulls are a well-balanced side,” Snyman noted. “They’ve got a strong set-piece, a very good kicking game and plenty of X factor across the park. A north-south derby always has an edge to it. Whatever both teams have done before this won’t count for much – it will come down to what happens on the day.”
