Hot on the heels of their dazzling 35-0 triumph over Leinster, the Stormers are set to dazzle Cape Town crowds again this Friday as they take on the Ospreys. With their rolling maul already wreaking havoc last game, it’s back by popular demand. Stormers' forward coach Rito Hlungwani has promised not just a repeat performance but also some sly moves to keep their scoring diverse and the Ospreys on their toes.
Hlungwani, the mastermind behind their formidable maul, spilled the beans on their strategy, “We want to have two or three ways of scoring tries because at the end of the day it’s all about putting points on the board,” he explained. The maul, which bulldozed its way to two tries against Leinster, will be a key feature yet again. But that’s not all, as Hlungwani hinted,
“We will definitely use the maul as much as we can, especially when it’s working. But we still want to score from counter-attacks or other moves. We need to have that element of deception.”
The Ospreys, fresh from a battle with last season's finalists, the Vodacom Bulls, are no pushovers, having shown their resilience in the first half before the Bulls took control in the latter stages of the game. Hlungwani respects the challenge ahead, emphasizing the need for focus. “It’s a team that never goes away. They’re a team we can’t take lightly, they’re going to challenge us. So it’s important for us to really be focused and ready to try and improve on our last performance. They’ve got a strong pack – there is no weak pack in this competition – so we’ll be ready for a tough challenge up front.”
While the Stormers' maul has been effective, Hlungwani admits there's room for refinement. “Probably just our timing. Timing in the lineouts, timing in how we link up with the backs, and that usually comes from playing more games. Just that transfer of the ball between forwards and backs I felt could’ve been more clinical. We want to be better – you have to continuously improve.”
As the Stormers gear up for another showdown, it’s clear they're not just relying on brute force but also clever tactics and continuous improvement. The stage is set at DHL Stadium for what promises to be a nail-biter. Grab your tickets, and don’t miss out on the action!
