Stuart Barnes, the forthright former England fly-half, has issued a clarion call to the RFU: sack Steve Borthwick. Following a dismal Six Nations showing, Barnes's critique is unsparing as he champions a radical leadership overhaul, advocating for the recruitment of ex-Wallabies coach Michael Cheika. This comes in the wake of England's Six Nations journey, marred by a string of defeats including a historic loss to Italy and culminating in a nail-biting defeat to France, sealed by a last-minute penalty from Thomas Ramos.

Barnes, never one to mince words, expressed his frustration in his column for the Sunday Times. "With the handbrake off, it is no surprise that England did what they did in Paris. This brave showing was an isolated performance in a Six Nations season of concentrated conservatism and should not alter the overwhelming question: should Borthwick stay or should he go?" he questioned. Despite a brief resurgence against France, Barnes remains unimpressed, pointing to a pattern of unadventurous play that has defined Borthwick's tenure.

"The kneejerk reaction is to say keep him off the back of Saturday’s result. Let’s avoid that and focus on Borthwick’s England since his appointment."

Barnes is joined by Andy Goode, another ex-England fly-half, who also believes that a shake-up is necessary. They propose that Michael Cheika, known for his dynamic approach and ability to inspire teams quickly, is the ideal candidate to rejuvenate the England squad. His track record speaks volumes, having revitalized the Australian team and led them to a World Cup final in 2015, a feat that included a dominant victory over England.

"Regardless of the result in Saturday night’s match, my conclusion would have been the same. England need a fresh man to take them to the World Cup. And that man is Michael Cheika."

Barnes criticizes Borthwick’s reliance on statistics over player instinct, contrasting it with Cheika's more holistic and inspiring coaching philosophy. With the Rugby World Cup looming just 18 months away, the decision to stick with Borthwick or opt for a new direction is pivotal. As Barnes and Goode outline, bringing in Cheika could be the bold move needed to avoid a calamitous showing at the upcoming global tournament.

This debate comes at a critical juncture for English rugby, with the RFU facing a significant decision. As Barnes aptly puts it, the choice is whether to "stick or twist". Choosing wrong could spell disaster, not just for Borthwick and RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney, but for the legacy of English rugby itself.
