I don’t watch much American football. But the Super Bowl is a cultural event and we had two well matched teams.
It was a far more exciting contest than the rugby this weekend. In the end the team that played the more positive game won out.
What strikes one is the competence of the refereeing….crisp, accurate and decisive. And also the unbridled physicality of the tackling, how rugby used to be. Football is far more recognizable as the game I first watched 50 plus years ago. Rugby has been hijacked by lawyers, slowed down, tied up with new rules which aren’t in the spirit of the game.
I don’t hate the 50/22 but what does it add to the game but more kicking and more mauls. Two things we need less of in rugby.
And then you have the lunacy of the on field decision. The ref calls the Scottish try held up and then the video ref is held to a higher standard to turn it over. If you going to the video make the best decision you can….as in tennis…not one that’s influenced by an uncertain ref call.
And how about that crazy aerial ping pong we saw in the Pom test….how has that got into the game.
Rugby needs to look at some other sports and try to define best practices.
