All Blacks and Crusaders powerhouse Tamaiti Williams, despite battling a less-than-perfect knee, made the bold decision to play in the Super Rugby Pacific final—a choice that cost him dearly. The loosehead prop, who had previously sustained a knee injury in a qualifying final against the Reds, wrapped up and stepped onto the field against the Chiefs. His contribution helped the Crusaders edge out a tight 16-12 victory, but the triumph came at a personal price: a more severe knee injury requiring surgery, sidelining him for the All Blacks' subsequent matches.

Williams, however, harbors no regrets. From Buenos Aires, where he is on the mend, he expressed a stoic resolve to put the team's interest before his own health.

"Yeah, I made it pretty clear from the start I will put my body on the line for the red and black jersey,"

Williams stated. He emphasized the importance of being true to his team and himself, adding,

"I feel like I was meant to play the final, which I was happy about."

The decision, while valorous, meant missing out on the All Blacks' clean sweep over France and a key Rugby Championship match against Argentina. His surgery and recovery, managed by the Crusaders' medical staff in Christchurch, coincided with the team's preparation and initial matches. Yet, Williams remained upbeat about his rehabilitation process and the support he received, noting, "I was around all the Canterbury [NPC] boys, so it wasn’t too lonely."

Now, as Williams eyes a return to the field in Buenos Aires for a rematch against Argentina, his presence is eagerly anticipated. The All Blacks are gearing up for a critical showdown with their fierce rivals, the Springboks, in the upcoming third round of the Rugby Championship at Eden Park. Williams' return could not be timelier, as his prowess in the front row has firmly established him as a key player for both his club and country.

The rugby world awaits his comeback, eager to see if this formidable prop can once again anchor the formidable All Blacks' pack.
