As the Rugby World Cup looms, former All Black, Lima Sopoaga, has showered praise on Tana Umaga, the newly appointed member of Dave Rennie’s coaching team. Umaga, a legendary figure in rugby, is set to take charge of the team's defense, a role he has been perfecting since his transition from player to coach. This coaching lineup includes Mike Blair, Neil Barnes, and Jason Ryan, the latter being the only holdover from Scott Robertson’s tenure.

Umaga's coaching resume is impressive, with stints at RC Toulon, Counties Manukau, New Zealand U20s, the Blues, Samoa, and Moana Pasifika. Despite varying levels of success, his influence on team defense has remained a constant. Sopoaga, who experienced Umaga's coaching firsthand during the 2023 World Cup with Samoa, highlighted Umaga's unique ability to connect on both a personal and professional level, which he believes is crucial for the All Blacks right now. “It’s just his aura. He has this massive aura that follows him around and the way that players connect with him on a personal level and at a rugby level really helps his coaching,” Sopoaga noted during an appearance on Sky Sport NZ’s Breakdown show.

“For me, Tana is someone who brings all of that. He brings connection. He brings culture. He brings the knowledge of coaching at Toulon, the Blues and in difficult situations as well."

Sopoaga also pointed out that Umaga’s defensive coaching will be pivotal, especially since he himself tried to steer clear of tackling duties. “I don’t really do much defense and he is a defense coach. I don’t like tackling, so I tried to stay away from him as much as I possibly could,” he joked. Yet, he acknowledged Umaga's deep understanding and his method of imparting knowledge to the players, which could revitalize the All Blacks.

Another former player, Joe Wheeler, expressed surprise at Umaga's attention to detail, which he initially doubted. “He doesn’t really strike me as a heavy detail coach, but that’s great to hear because I just thought he’d be more of a system framework, but really dialling in on the attitudes of players and the togetherness of players, because that’s the essence of defense in many respects, but also dialling in on the brutality of defense,” Wheeler added. This blend of strategic rigor and emotional intelligence might just be what the All Blacks need to rediscover their former glory under Umaga’s guidance.
