At the tender age of 18, Markus Muller has already rubbed shoulders with rugby royalty. Invited to Rassie Erasmus’ inaugural 2026 alignment camp, Muller found himself in the company of his childhood hero, Handré Pollard, an encounter that left the young prodigy nearly speechless.
Muller, a recent standout from the schoolboy ranks, was one of only two teenagers to receive the nod for this high-profile Springbok camp, signaling a clear intent by Erasmus to groom the next generation of talent. “Handré Pollard has always been my hero and it was really nice to meet him,” Muller revealed on the Behind the Ruck podcast. A connection facilitated by a shared mentor at Paarl Gym, where Pollard also studied, added a personal touch to their meeting. “I was shocked but then I knew she had said something to him. So yes, it was really nice to meet him.”
"I honestly didn’t expect it at all. I think none of us, who were in Georgia, did."
Despite his youth, Muller's skills on the field have already earned him a debut in the Stormers XXIII over the weekend, intensifying the buzz around this emerging rugby star. The call to join the Bok squad came as a complete surprise. “I didn’t have the slightest idea what was going on. However, two days later we were all added to a WhatsApp group (for the) Springbok alignment camp. I couldn’t believe it,” Muller confessed.
The reality of his situation sunk in upon arriving at the camp, surrounded by seasoned players who had clinched the Rugby World Cup when he was just in primary school. “They were all extremely friendly. From management to players, all of them. They welcomed me very well. So, that was an incredible experience,” he shared.
Muller's inclusion in such a prestigious group underscores the anticipation of his potential impact on the international stage, a sentiment echoed by fans and experts alike who have followed his ascent from schoolboy sensation to professional athlete. As Muller continues to train and play alongside the best, the rugby world watches eagerly, anticipating the rise of a new star on the global stage.
