The Double Throw Lineout

This looks like a good idea when the middle of the lineout Jumper throws back to the front of the lineout jumper while in the air. The return throw can be passed backwards - unlike a lineout throw that has to be straight.

It would be hard to protect a lineout against 2 jumpers at the same time to prevent the rolling maul.

Clever idea….but more as a misdirect. If you did it often it would be like winning your lineout twice,

The Boks did score on their first attempt using this. It could be effective when the Boks struggle to get the rolling maul going. A 5-10 metre lineout is still Bok's most effective attacking weapon.

It is usually easier to set up a maul from the middle of a lineout.

Once it becomes apparent that the throw is going to the middle of the lineout, the props will bind behind their lock. This could clear out some space in the front of the lineout to set the drive by the Boks outnumbering the opposition. It also allows the maul to peel off to the blindside closer to the touchline with forwards, or to have the blind side winger run flat at pace.

It's a good strategy by creating doubt as to the point of attack.

Also with the scrum against the touchline using Kolbe at 9 instead of wasted defending the touchline they had an extra player in the backline with Reinach positioned in the backline

Clever little plays being introduced by Rassie and co. Suddenly the Aussie backs had an extra man to defend against
