The Impact of the Red card

No doubt Cane deserved a card. He received it at minute 27, so the team received an additional 43 minutes over a straight yellow. What does that mean? It turns out a comprehensive study of the topic has been done. Here’s a summary:

‘If we look at the equation of the line (y = 0.241x), the slope indicates that for each minute following a red card, the team with the player advantage will score 0.241 net points. Again, this is a scenario where it may be better to trade off some accuracy for increased understanding by simply rounding the slope to 0.25 points.  Thus for the sake of simplicity it may be easier to remember that the team with the red card advantage should score a quarter of a point per minute following the red card.’

So a yellow was certain, meaning the net effect of the red was 43 minutes or approximately 10 points. Technically any contact with the head can be called a red….to me this was marginal. Kolisi’s tackle seemed more dangerous.

Sad to see a World Cup won with a handicap.

Sorry, it’s just text and up on my screen. Here’s a link:

But the conclusion of a comprehensive study suggests every minute of having a player advantage should yield 0.25 points. Thus 43 minutes should yield 10 net points to the team advantaged.

The ABs made a game of this, when most teams would have folded.

Supports what we saw with our own eyes. This AB team gave it everything but against some tough odds ??

The card must have had a huge impact, but it was as if the Boks took the foot off the pedal after the card...we were all over NZ in the first half-hour.

Well, all being said and done, the lesson NZ must ultimately learn is that you don't enter games like this without a competent place kicker. Boks learned that again against Ireland, that's why Pollard was there.

Draad, the Boks did the same as they did against England - we didn't play. We kick, hope for an error, no error comes, defend defend, kick again. Rinse and repeat. Kriel kicking the ball down the All Blacks throats with just 1 minute left on the clock shows how ingrained it is. 40% possession, double the tackles of the opposition. We defend our way to a win and pick on any scraps that happen to bounce our way. That's the Rasnaber way.

That's the Rasnaber way. .........................play to your strengths, defend & feed off errors .

I know I like the ABs a lot more after last night.

Our best foe by far, but blokes you can have a beer with after the match, without it turning into a brawl...

Oct 29, 2023, 10:01

I recall the Boks winning a turnover and then kicking it away immediately. There's no denying it, this is the worst rugby the Boks have ever played.

Oct 29, 2023, 10:57

So we win the RWC playing the worst rugby we ever played.

We have the worst coach ever, tbe worst team ever. The worst defence and to top it a off the have a soft under bmy and a glass jaw.

These are the opinions of the most bigoted, virulently anti Bok buffoon ever to have posted on this board.

He rated Du Toit as a 3!!! But Du Toit was MOM of the match and got in 28 tackles equalling the RWC record.

Name me anybody who has been worse.

Really? Pollard missed 9 tackles, Daman 4, Willemse 4, Arendse 4, Etzebeth 3, Kolisi 4... are you sure the defence was good? How many "successful tackles" were dragged back several metres at a time as the Kiwis punched into the line like freight trains? The defence was exceedingly poor, as it has been for several years.

Damian made 1m in 5 runs. We got about 18m from our centres in over 20 carries. Nothing was happening on attack at all. We kick, we chase kick and look for bounces.

This still remains the worst ever Bok WC side. They were dominated by Scotland. Tonga, France, England, Ireland, and New Zealand. That's not an opinion, that's a matter of fact. If only we had a coach.

Hahahahahaha. Draad that Somes up  Doos.

I wonder how long his tantrum is going to last.

He has been telling how pathetic the Boks and Rassie are for years.

Now the hater is doubling down on stupid!

Draad I think there was a loss of intensity after the red card was given, but the subs were hyped to go. These red cards do tend to discombobulate both teams. The effect on the receiving team is to open up their defense and to wear down the players.

After 40 minutes playing a man down teams tend to  be fading. To NZ’s credit they never lost intensity.

But these reactions are not unique to this game and fully incorporated in the equation. So the 10 point differential was par for the game….the number the Boks should have registered.

And the fact that we were unable to score a try against 14 men is another asterisk on the win. We are world champions and have cemented our reputation as the world’s toughest team. But the stories about this WC final will be about the ABs courage.

We were ahead and played  percentages it worked, but only barely...and we needed a bit of luck too.

Oct 30, 2023, 06:19

We have just won two back to back rugby world cups....

Spin that absolutely any way that you want to..... it takes a little bit more than just luck to do that, even if we are playing this very poor brand of rugby that some people keep harping on about....

We just consecutively played and beat the world's top 5 best playing rugby nations in the world .... to win this world cup ..... yeah we were lucky.....

Pull the other one .... and maybe just show a little bit of respect.

Not disagreeing the overall sentiments of your post DA, but remember that we lost to Ireland.

Oct 30, 2023, 13:21

We played 4 teams who were a real challenge….lost to one, beat three others by a total of 3 points.  Lost to Ireland by 5 points. So cumulatively we lost to those top 4 teams by 2 points.

And sure  winning is the thing, but pretending the card  wasn’t a huge advantage is delusional.
