3’/26 to Australia in 1992

15/32 to Australia in 1994

18/34 to New Zealand in 1999

16/52 to New Zealand in 2003

26/45 to New Zealand in 2006

9/28 to the Lions 2009

16/32 to NZ in 2012

15/57 to NZ in 2016

10/25 to England in 2018

23/35 to NZ in 2022

22/38 to Australia in 2025

We can eliminate a few of these losses from consideration. The 1992 and 1994 losses reflected the Boks emerging from isolation. The 1999 loss was bad but just before the WC. The loss to the Lions in 2009 came after we had won the Lions series.

The loss in 2006 came during the attempted coup to displace Jake…we weren’t focussed. And the loss in 2012 was early in HM’s tenure rebuilding after the Snor period. Likewise the Pom loss in 2018 came early in Dr Lucky’s tenure.

That leaves 2003, 2016, 2022 and 2025. Interestingly 3 mega losses during Dr Lucky’s tenure, one forgiven. And while the loss in 2022 was bad it was the narrowest margin of the list. So let that go.

So we have 2003, where Destroyli did exactly what Dr Lucky’s did this year, get enamored with creating new Boks….squad expansion. Why don’t we learn from history?

In 2016 we had the Coetzee debacle, a match that was close at the half turned into a run away aided by a yellow card to Lomp…..but our defense simply cracked.

Yesterday was even more dramatic, comfortably in the lead after 20 minutes, we never scored another point. Was it the worst loss….certainly it was the worst choke. In terms of thrashings 2003 and 2016 were worse. But when we say worse loss I think we mean underperformed, choked, got out thought……let ourselves down.

You choose, but for me this is the worst Bok loss ever on home soil, granted the seventies Lions tour may have seen worse losses but I had no way of seeing those games.

This was one of the most stunning things I have seen in sports….the Aussies running through us from deep in our own half, poaching our lineouts, beating us on the ground. Who would have thought it could be that bad.

The good news is after several of those mega losses we had good wins in the next game. …. 8 out of 11 times. We’ll win next Saturday.

What a terrible analysis.

worst loss since 1990 and proceeds to eliminate a bunch of losses in that period in his analysis.

They were eliminated for the reasons I supplied you can disagree if you like but it’s a judgement call. Otherwise just go for the biggest differential 2016. Happy now?

That must be one of the biggest upset in rugby history.

My God we were poor.
