Springboks' tactical mastermind Tony Brown isn't shy about doling out high praise when it comes to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the young phenom carving out his legacy alongside rugby's elite. At just 23, Feinberg-Mngomezulu played a pivotal role in South Africa's retention of the Rugby Championship, dazzling in their rout of Argentina with a performance that echoed the brilliance of legends like Dan Carter.

Brown, a strategic genius from New Zealand now entrenched with the Springboks post-2023 World Cup, sees in Feinberg-Mngomezulu a rare breed of player. "There are special players out there that come along and they’re special because they can do things that other guys can’t do on the rugby field," he remarked on The Breakdown. His ability to find gaps and his versatility across the backline positions of 10, 12, and 15 amplify his impact on the game, akin to French maestro Antoine Dupont.

"He’s got that talent, he sees space better than anyone, he’s got athletic ability to attack as a 10, 15 or a 12."

Despite a setback that saw him miss the 2024 season end due to injury, Feinberg-Mngomezulu stormed back in 2025, donning the Stormers’ 10 jersey. His resilience is not just in recovery but in his style of play; unlike some fly-halves who shy away from contact, Feinberg-Mngomezulu embraces it. His boxing prowess underlines his physicality—something Brown admires. "He’s actually quite a tough kid, he’s a boxer so you don’t want to take him on, on the rugby field, you see him get into a few scuffles, so he’s a scrapper as well," said Brown.

The focus for Brown is honing this raw talent into a consistent match-winning force. "He’s got the talent so my job is just to get him to do the simple things well, things that win you Test matches: kick your goals, kick well out of hand, control the game, lead the team around the field. If I can do that, his talent’s just going to come out all the time on the rugby field."

Rassie Erasmus, known for his innovative approach, continues to shape the Springboks with strategic acumen, possibly hinting at a Cheslin Kolbe role change and a debut for a rookie against Japan. As for Feinberg-Mngomezulu, under the tutelage of both Brown and Erasmus, the sky's the limit for this young Springbok whose career is already drawing parallels with some of the greatest to ever play the game.
