In a series of notable moves within the rugby world, utility back David Kriel of the Bulls is set to join La Rochelle, while Glasgow Warriors' hooker Johnny Matthews will make his way to Montauban. Additionally, Exeter Chiefs' lively full-back Josh Hodge has made an immediate switch to Newcastle Red Bulls.

David Kriel, a key figure for the Bulls since 2020, will start his new chapter in France this July. With 142 appearances for the Bulls, Kriel's adaptability has seen him excel in multiple backline positions. "I couldn’t be more excited to be heading there to learn French culture, to meet new people and still do the thing that I love most," Kriel expressed, reflecting on his move. He also shared his gratitude towards the Bulls, "I’m very thankful for every coach, every player, every staff member, and every fan for making my time here so memorable."

"Goodbyes are never easy, especially to something that means so much to me and a place I’ve called home for the last six years. It’s very difficult to say goodbye,"

Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone praised Kriel's professionalism and impact, "David has been a quintessential professional and a cornerstone of our backline over the last six seasons," he stated. "While we are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his versatility and character, we believe in supporting our players’ ambitions to test themselves in different leagues."

Meanwhile, Johnny Matthews' relocation to Montauban comes after an impressive stint with the Glasgow Warriors, where he was a top try-scorer in their 2023/24 URC victorious campaign. Glasgow Warriors assistant coach Nigel Carolan discussed the move, "Look, there was an option for Johnny but it probably wasn’t a long-term option. And, you know, he’s got a multi-year deal in France. Something that suits him and his young family."

"It’s never nice to lose a player like Johnny – he’s been brilliant for us – but as I said, it’s just the evolution of a rugby team,"

In another development, Josh Hodge's early transfer to Newcastle Red Bulls was facilitated by an agreement with Exeter Chiefs. Neil McIlroy, the sporting general manager for Newcastle, expressed his enthusiasm for Hodge's early arrival, "We would like to thank Exeter Chiefs for their co-operation in enabling Josh to join us early. He is a quality player who will enhance our playing options between now and the end of the season."

As these players embark on new journeys, the rugby landscape continues to evolve, promising exciting developments for the players and their respective teams.
