On a wild Friday night in Nelspruit, Danrich Visagie turned into a one-man wrecking crew, amassing 24 points to catapult the Pumas past a self-destructing Griquas team in the first game of the 2025 Currie Cup. Riddled with penalty woes, the Griquas, who saw three of their players sent to the sin bin, couldn't keep the lid on a Pumas side that smelled blood and went in for the kill, ending the game at a punishing 49-28.

The game was nothing short of a rollercoaster, with the lead flipping back and forth seven times in just the first half. The Pumas, 2022 Currie Cup champs, were put through their paces early on but managed to edge ahead 25-23 by halftime. This narrow lead was thanks in part to tries from Sango Xamlashe and Eddie Swart, with Visagie adding the extras from the boot.

The Griquas, on the other hand, were kept afloat by George Whitehead, who scored a try, nailed two conversions, and popped over three penalties. However, their hopes dimmed as they lost key players Caleb Abrahams, Whitehead himself, and winger Gershwin Wehr to yellow cards. Their absence was keenly felt as the Pumas began to dominate.

"Once the dam wall broke, the flood followed."

In the second half, the Pumas shifted gears with Wiaan van Niekerk, JJ Scheepers, and Darren Adonis all crossing the whitewash. The floodgates truly opened, and the Pumas surged ahead to seal a dominant victory that sends a clear message to their rivals for the season.

Looking ahead, the Pumas are set to continue their campaign on the road against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein for round 2. Meanwhile, the Griquas will look to regroup and reclaim some pride when they host Boland. Both teams will be eager to correct their courses, making for some intriguing matchups in the coming weeks.

As the dust settles in Nelspruit, the Pumas have laid down the gauntlet, showing that they are not just participants in this season's Currie Cup, but formidable contenders aiming for back-to-back glory.
