In a strategic move to strengthen their coaching lineup, Wales rugby has snagged Pete Murchie from Japan's Kobe Steelers to join as the new defence coach. This addition comes just in time for the much-anticipated Nations Championship, signaling a robust era for Welsh rugby under head coach Steve Tandy.

Murchie, a former Scotland international, brings a wealth of experience from his time with Glasgow Warriors and Scotland U20s, including a pivotal role in Glasgow's 2024 United Rugby Championship victory. His transition from Japan to the international stage marks a significant step in his coaching career.

Wales has faced defensive challenges recently, with the team conceding over 300 points in just seven tests under Tandy. The appointment of a dedicated defence coach aims to fortify Welsh defence and improve their international standings.

"The opportunity to move into international rugby with Wales, where there are so many exciting competitions on the horizon, was something that me and my family are hugely excited about."

Murchie expressed his enthusiasm about the new role and highlighted Tandy's influence in his decision, stating, "Steve was a huge driver for me. I know he is a world-class coach, and we have worked together closely before. I am looking forward to joining up with the squad in the summer and getting to work."

Steve Tandy reciprocated the sentiment, emphasizing Murchie's capabilities and style.

"It’s great to welcome Pete to the coaching team. He is a really talented coach with a great style and mindset. He’ll be a real asset for us as a group and I can’t wait for him to join us this summer to help shape the squad’s development as we head into the Nations Championship."

WRU Director of Rugby and Elite Performance, Dave Reddin, also commented on the new hire, noting Murchie’s deep understanding of Tandy’s defensive strategies and his potential to quickly integrate and add value to the team as they build towards the Rugby World Cup 2027.

With these strategic moves, the Welsh team is clearly gearing up for a competitive showing in upcoming international fixtures, laying down a marker that they are in it to elevate their game on the global stage.
