Wallabies stalwarts Michael Hooper and Matt Burke have fired back at Sir Clive Woodward following his critique of Australia’s supposed 'losing mentality' in the recent clash against the British and Irish Lions. Woodward's scathing comments came after Wallabies captain Harry Wilson chose safety over glory by kicking the ball dead, sealing the game's outcome despite a potential last-gasp try opportunity.

The contentious moment occurred in the dying seconds of the match, with Australia trailing and possession regained near their own line. Rather than risking a counter-attack from the Lions, Wilson opted to end the game, a decision Woodward lambasted as indicative of a deeper malaise within Australian rugby. "With the clock in the red and the Lions leading, the decision to not continue playing was a clear reflection of a losing mentality," Woodward asserted in his column.

"I’m surprised by the comments of Clive, a great coach, what more could be done?"

However, Hooper and Burke defended the decision robustly. Appearing on Stan Sports' "Between Two Posts," Hooper argued for the pragmatism of Wilson’s decision: "It's a mature decision because he goes 'We have got two games still in the series, there is nothing we can do here, the game is dead.'"

Burke supported Hooper's view, emphasizing the potential risk of turning the ball over and conceding even more points. "You try go 100 metres and you drop the ball, they toe it through, and the opposition score," he explained, underlining the tactical considerations that influenced Wilson’s decision. Hooper added, "And they almost did, before the lineout."

Instead of dwelling on the Wallabies' tactics, Hooper suggested that Woodward might better focus his critique on the Lions' performance, which lacked the killer instinct shown in other matches. "Clive should be thinking, why didn’t the Lions put the foot on the throat in the second half?" Hooper questioned, pointing out the inconsistency in the Lions' approach compared to their dominance in previous games.

Commentator Sean Maloney also chimed in, ridiculing the notion that the Wallabies displayed a losing mentality. "Nick Frost has just gone up and in front of Itoje, who is one of the best going around, and plucked it off him to deny them a rolling maul try. Like turn it up."

The debate underscores the intense scrutiny and strategic complexities inherent in rugby at the highest level, where every decision can be dissected and debated at length. As the series progresses, the Wallabies and their captain's decisions will continue to be under the microscope, both from critics and supporters alike.
