In a dramatic turn of events shaking the foundations of Welsh rugby, WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood has declared he won't seek re-election after his current term ends in July 2026. This bombshell drops as Collier-Keywood faces a precarious vote of no confidence scheduled for April 13, during an extraordinary general meeting in Cardiff. The vote stems from contentious proposals to reduce the number of Welsh professional teams from four to three by 2027.

Collier-Keywood stated, “It has been a tremendous privilege to serve as the first independent WRU chair. My term as chair comes to an end in July 2026 and I have been reflecting with the board on what should happen next.” He added that the announcement was timed to facilitate a smooth transition and recruitment process for his successor.

"We wanted to make this announcement to enable the recruitment process to start and before the EGM is held on 13 April 2026 so everyone goes into the EGM process with the benefit of the same knowledge."

Despite the controversies and challenges, Collier-Keywood reflected positively on his tenure, noting the unanimous board decisions made during tough times and his role in steering cultural and financial shifts within the WRU. He expressed pride in leaving with two Welsh head coaches, Steve Tandy and Sean Lynn, at the helm, emphasizing his anticipation of watching Welsh rugby flourish from a different perspective.

Senior independent director Alison Thorne lauded Collier-Keywood's contributions, saying, "He can be very proud of integrating and leading a new board of elected members and independent non-executives to create a new strategy and direction for a sustainable rugby future in Wales." She highlighted his pivotal role in cultural change and financial improvement, including a significant refinancing in January 2026.

As the WRU gears up for a crucial EGM, the forthcoming vote and the search for a new chair will undoubtedly be pivotal in shaping the future trajectory of Welsh rugby. With a formal, open recruitment process set to commence soon, all eyes will be on how the WRU navigates these turbulent waters.
