Flyhalf. Is there another choice?
Flyhalf. Is there another choice?
8
I was on the bench
Not the sin bin?
Fly half with 9 being my second choice.
Mozart ! I’m shocked ha ha ha !
Well we were always warned about the English girls!
Oh were you now ?! How rude !
Damn colonials….we never know our place. Rude, loud,
argumentative.
Played wing up to U13, then got moved to 10 at U14 and played most of my rugby at 10 and 12
I enjoyed the responsibility and pressure at 10, getting your kicking out of hand on point or kicking for touch when stuck in your 22. Making all the attacking calls at 10
I enjoyed 12 just as much in that it was on your shoulders to create. I was big so loved the confrontation. Used to always target my opposite number early on for a good bit of crashball - to let them know you meant business
I was just as aggressive on the cricket field more so as an adult
Yes, Mozart, damned colonials I was always warned about South African boys…..not that I ever listened !
#10 and had a few games on the wing.
Right behind the Great Keith Oxlee.
My father in law played bowls with Keith Oxlee and Hugh Tayfield
Played 9 at u14...then a growth spurt happened and was upgraded to 13.
My best mate, Paul Crabtree played 12. I would start the fights and he'd finish them. Poor chap served in Iraq in his twenties and then cancer got the better of him.
Spoke to him a few times before he died and each time we spoke he told me how our schooldays were the best. Couldn't agree more, and I doubt that will ever change.
Hooker - Most of my career... best position on the parrk
Flank - on the odd occasion
Doggy - position of choice these days
Chippo, I take you the one blighting the pillow too.
LMAO King
only when Saffex's mum isnt available.
Chip chip
Dave,
That was at the Stamford Hill Bowling Club in Durban,
I could possibly have had a cold Castle or two with him
then.
AJ his name is Billy Mowat - great, great man.
Has so great stories about Tayfield and Oxlee
Tayfield was about being on tour and the captain being very strict about players not leaving the hotel. Captain used to keep an eye and ear out and caught Tayfield trying to escape and punched him on the nose
Oxlee had the story of the team being on tour in France and they were being hosted at some posh restaurant and the captain asked if he could say grace in Afrikaans, where he told the players not to steal the expensive cutlery.
Hahaha….stealing the ball is one thing, but the cutlery….now that’s a real fetcher.
He also told the story of taking a girl back to his room and banging her all night and when he said he could no longer get it up she shoved her finger up his butt and that seemed to do the trick :)
Yes many a story came out after a few but best not to repeat any.
Keith and Hugh will always be great guys and sportsman to me.
Some stories are best to keep to ourselves I believe.
Dave I cannot recall him but then we are talking about many moons ago.
But I would think we might
have had a cold one together. So many years, so many lost memories and so many great friends all gone.
AJ stories kept are no longer stories
Stories should always be told

Just to switch things up a bit after watching a clip where a prope ran into a gap in the 10 channel and then trying to chip a full back with little success.
Not sure about anyone on here, but I actually played a lot of positions at school, not that I wanted to but just where the coach wanted to use me. I remember joining a school mid year, but the only position they had for me in the first team was prop. Even though I was tall and skinny.
The most fun I had was playing at 10 for a men's club 2nd team. The only down side was that I could never drop kick, no matter how hard I tried. I can kick well out of hand and my place kicking is super accurate, although limited distance.
Two of the positions I hated playing was prop and lock. Especially if some fat bastard never washed or have you head squeezed.
I did play at 8th man for Landsdown road in Dublin which I played most of my junior rugby. Either as an 8 or flanker, but sometimes got shifted to lock because someone was whining.
I ended up shifting to inside centre for Landsdown because of my size and being able to crash ball. I actually enjoyed moving from the pack to centre. Got more space to run, but enjoyed playing 10 the most. Got to setup plays and run the ball.
The problem I had was the coaches mentality in South Africa. If you are big or tall then you should be a forward. I was taller then most boys at school, so even though I was the fastest in the atheletics team, some dumb rugby coach that just looked at me and said lock.
Yeah, so I'm curious to find out which positions you played, which you enjoyed and which you hated the most
