The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is on the brink of implementing a groundbreaking overhaul of its professional rugby infrastructure, proposing to halve the number of its teams from four to two. This dramatic consolidation aims to revive the floundering fortunes of the national sport, with an announcement expected later this week.

The WRU's drastic strategy involves reducing its current quartet of teams to just two, each supporting a men's and a women's squad. In this new setup, the men's teams would boast 50 players each and operate on a budget of £7.8 million, while the women's teams would consist of 40 players. Funding for the women's teams, although fully supported by the WRU, would lag behind their male counterparts.

Cardiff Rugby appears immune to cuts, thanks to WRU ownership, positioning them as a key asset. Conversely, the Scarlets, bolstered by fresh investment, seem poised to survive the cull. The Ospreys and Dragons, however, face an anxious wait, with their futures hanging in the balance as they strive to maintain their professional status within their regions.

"The current system isn't delivering success on the field or sustainability off it, despite recent financial boosts,"

a WRU spokesperson stated, highlighting the dire need for change.

The restructuring plan includes two phases: initially, the WRU would cut two teams and take full control of the remaining pair, transitioning players and staff to central national contracts. The second phase envisions all professional operations relocating to a large national rugby campus, facilitating up to 400 individuals, to enhance the integration with lower-tier competitions like the Super Rygbi Cymru.

The WRU's proposed measures are set to undergo a six-week consultation period, after which the favored options will be presented to stakeholders. A final decision is slated for the end of October, setting the stage for a transformative era in Welsh rugby.

The teams discussed in this article are Cardiff Rugby, Scarlets, Ospreys, and Dragons.
