With the seasoned Springboks taking a breather, Sharks coach JP Pietersen is tossing the ball to the newbies for this Saturday's Vodacom URC face-off against the Lions at Ellis Park. It's showtime for the young Sharks, as they dive into the deep end without the likes of Andre Esterhuizen and Siya Kolisi. Pietersen is all about giving these rising stars a shot to shine and show what they're made of.

According to Pietersen, "It gives you that opportunity to see if the guys in between – those in transition from juniors to seniors, or seniors who haven’t had enough game time – are improving week by week." This match is more than just a game; it's a proving ground for the Sharks' up-and-comers and benchwarmers.

"It’s a great opportunity for some of them to put up their hands."

The spotlight is particularly bright on Thomas Dyer, who's snagged the No. 8 jersey. Pietersen sees this as a golden chance for Dyer to flex his muscles against the formidable Lions' loose trio. "It’s going to be a good challenge for Tom, but he is more than capable enough to perform, and he’s been in our system for a long time," he noted, hinting at a rough and tumble showdown in the heart of Johannesburg.

Another player to watch is Tino Mavesere, who'll be testing his mettle flank-to-flank against the Lions. As for the backline, Jurenzo Julius is sliding into the 12 jersey, a strategic move by Pietersen to maximize his impact. "It’s about his explosiveness, how strong he is in contact … you want Jurenzo to touch the ball more in a game," Pietersen explained, anticipating Julius to wreak havoc whenever he gets the ball.

The Sharks are hungry for redemption after a sluggish start in their last skirmish with the Lions, which saw them trailing by 17 points early on. "They beat us in Durban and in that first half they showed how to put us under pressure," Pietersen recalled, expecting a brisk pace from the get-go in this rematch.

As the Sharks and Lions prepare for another epic showdown, keep an eye on these young Sharks who are eager to make a splash and prove their worth in the big league.
