Munster rugby icon Simon Zebo isn't mincing words when it comes to Leinster's recent struggles and their upcoming campaign in the Investec Champions Cup. As the Dublin squad gears up to face Harlequins this Saturday, Zebo throws a stark reminder their way: the clock is ticking for this star-studded team to secure another European title, something they haven't done since 2018 despite their overflowing roster of international talents.

Leinster, despite being the current United Rugby Championship champions and adding All Blacks standout Rieko Ioane to their ranks, have faltered on the European stage, with their last significant loss coming against Northampton in last May’s semi-finals. “Definitely a very good reminder…” Zebo reflects on that defeat with a mix of schadenfreude and seriousness, suggesting it should serve as a wake-up call.

"Will Leinster be haunted by that defeat? I hope they are, I’m not going to lie, I loved that,"

However, Zebo believes the quality in Leinster's squad, which boasts 12 Lions and 21 internationals, is more than capable of overcoming past disappointments. Yet, he warns that they need to step up their game dramatically as they approach the critical stages of the Champions Cup this season. Failure to do so could see history repeat itself with another premature exit.

The Munster legend also touched on the intense rivalry witnessed during Munster's dominant victory over Leinster at Croke Park earlier in the season. He criticized Leinster’s performance as lackluster and mentally unprepared to face their fierce rivals, suggesting that Munster’s display of grit and determination was a showcase of how high the stakes were.

"They didn’t strike me as a team playing in front of your home fans against your enemies, your arch rivals. Mentally, they weren’t switched on for that level that Munster brought, and they got punished correctly."

Looking ahead, Zebo playfully comments on his plans to meet with Bath's Finn Russell, his former teammate, joking about 'poisoning' him ahead of their crucial European fixtures. This light-hearted banter underscores the intense competition and camaraderie that exists between players at this level.

Zebo also praises Henry Arundell, another Bath standout, noting his extraordinary speed and potential to impact the Champions Cup profoundly. “His point of difference, his X factor, is incredible. I love watching him play, and he has a massive, massive future,” Zebo added, highlighting the young wing’s promising capabilities.

As the Champions Cup season kicks off, Zebo will be part of the Premier Sports team covering every game live, bringing insights and analysis directly from a legend of the game.
