Former Wales flyhalf Dan Biggar has offered his candid thoughts on the ongoing saga concerning South African teams in the Investec Champions Cup. His pointed remarks follow a bold statement from Sharks owner Marco Masotti, who threatened to cease his financial support if South African teams withdrew from the tournament.

“It is important for rugby that we invest in the club game and have the South African franchises play in the most high-profile and lucrative competitions,” Masotti stated, emphasizing his commitment to the Champions Cup.

"Let me be clear, I will no longer fund the losses if we pull out of the Champions Cup."

This declaration came amidst discussions about the future involvement of SA teams in European competitions, spurred by concerns over player welfare.

Biggar chimed in on the matter, criticizing the Sharks for not fielding their strongest line-up in European matches, particularly highlighted by their recent outing against the Sale Sharks.

“If you’re in it, you’re in it, so you can’t be half-pregnant on this, can you? You’ve got to be, ‘right, we’re fully in on this and we’re going to get it’,”

he said during his appearance on The Rugby Pod, pointing out the inconsistency in the team's commitment.

The issue of South African participation in the Champions Cup is heating up especially as SA Rugby announced plans to host a workshop to reassess their involvement in international competitions. This move could potentially reshape the landscape of club rugby, with the Springboks currently wielding significant influence on the global stage. “They just hold so much power in the game at the minute,” Biggar noted, acknowledging the prominence of the Springbok brand in world rugby.

With the television deal for the Champions Cup up for renewal soon, the future of the tournament might hinge on the decisions made by these powerful stakeholders. Speculations suggest changes could be afoot, with potential shifts in broadcaster partnerships which could redefine how the game is viewed and followed by fans around the world.

As this high-stakes drama unfolds, the rugby community remains on edge, waiting to see if the Sharks and other South African teams will continue to battle it out on Europe's elite rugby stage or if they will take a different path.
