In a heart-stopping SVNS World Championship final, the Blitzboks succumbed to a resurgent Australian squad, 26-19, in Valladolid. Despite an initial lead, South Africa couldn't clinch the title, with coach Philip Snyman citing a lack of clinical execution as the primary downfall. Australia's comeback was marked by capitalizing on opportunities that the Blitzboks squandered.

"Australia were deserved winners tonight," acknowledged Snyman. "They played very good rugby all tournament long and used their opportunities better in the final." The match wasn't without its controversies, including a crucial forward-pass ruling by the TMO that potentially cost the Blitzboks a late equalizer and a shot at extra-time. However, Snyman refused to pin the loss on this single incident. "Sevens is brutal and so are the margins sometimes. We also had other opportunities, which we did not use, that one pass was not the reason we did not win," he explained.

"We need to look better after our ball. In the final, we missed too many tackles and that got them back into the game."

The Blitzboks showcased flashes of brilliance, particularly on the final day, yet Snyman was critical of their overall performance throughout the tournament. "Yes, we did very well at stages [on Sunday], but we will have to revisit those areas where we did not do as well as we should have," he stated, reflecting on the team's rocky start. "You are supposed to set the standard on day one and pick up the momentum from there, but we did not quite do that and in fact struggled on the first two days."

Looking ahead, the Blitzboks still lead the World Championship standings, holding a slender four-point lead over Argentina, with the final round looming in Bordeaux. They find themselves grouped with Fiji, Kenya, and Great Britain in Pool A. Meanwhile, Australia will face Spain, USA, and Uruguay in Pool B; Argentina contends with New Zealand, France, and Germany in Pool C.

The journey to Bordeaux represents a crucial pivot point for the Blitzboks as they aim to solidify their earlier season success and overcome the shortcomings exposed in Valladolid. With the series title already in their trophy cabinet, the focus now shifts to finishing strong in the face of stiff competition.
