In a gripping Investec Champions Cup round-of-16 battle at Stade Mayol, Toulon narrowly triumphed over the Stormers with a 28-27 scoreline, despite being down two players by the match's climax. Toulon's centre Juan Ignacio Brex, visibly perplexed, shared his astonishment over the Stormers' tactical choices during the crucial final moments.

Brex, who also serves as Toulon's vice-captain, expected the Stormers to capitalize on Toulon's weakened defense by spreading the ball wide.

"I was waiting for them to play wide in the last five to 10 minutes when we were down to 13,"

Brex disclosed in a post-match discussion.

"I was absolutely stunned they didn’t try to go around us as it was the obvious thing to do."

Instead, the Stormers opted for a narrow attack, much to the advantage of Toulon's robust pack renowned for its physicality and defensive organization.

Brex elaborated on the scenarios Toulon faced, being significantly outnumbered in defense. "We were down to one centre and it was obviously more dangerous because we only had one guy in defense behind us, so four on two all the time, if you like. So I was waiting for them to play wide, but they didn’t do it." This tactical misstep by the Stormers simplified the defense for Toulon, allowing them to concentrate on defending the ruck and maintaining control over the contact area.

The victory against the Stormers sets the stage for a quarter-final clash with the Glasgow Warriors, a matchup Brex anticipates will be a greater tactical challenge. Under Franco Smith’s guidance, Glasgow has evolved into a formidable side, adept in balancing attacking flair with astute gameplay. "Glasgow are first in the URC and they were one of the best teams in the pool stage of the Champions Cup," Brex noted. He stressed the importance of constant vigilance against a team like Glasgow. "We need to be aware everywhere. We cannot stop thinking for even one second, because if you stop, they will score, they are really that good."

The upcoming game against Glasgow promises to be a thrilling encounter, testing Toulon's resilience and strategic acumen on the European stage.
