With the URC quarter-finals on the horizon, Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has issued a clear mandate for his team: sharpen up on attack. Despite a convincing 45-19 win over Benetton at Loftus Versfeld, Ackermann insists that the side’s approach needs significant refinement before they face off against last season’s champs, Munster, on May 30.

Ackermann didn’t mince words about the team's performance. "There’s still a lot of work to be done," he stated, pointing to lapses that nearly cost them dearly. “There were soft moments and small mistakes that compounded pressure on ourselves. Those are the things we have to fix.” His critique underscores a broader concern about how minor errors can escalate under high-stakes conditions.

“It’s our general skill, finishing and decision-making that we have to focus on,” Ackermann emphasized.

The coach highlighted a particularly telling moment in the game against Benetton where a promising attack swiftly turned into a defensive disaster, leading to a 14-point swing against them. "You don’t want to give away 14 points through soft moments and poor decision-making,” he lamented. This sequence underscored his point about the critical need for smarter play and better execution.

Ackermann, along with assistant coach Neil de Bruin, is encouraging the team to be bold in their gameplay. “Myself and Neil want the players to have a go and we’ll never fault a player for trying. But you must make sure you execute. It’s all about execution,” he asserted. The duo is focusing on correcting tactical errors, like misplaced kicks and missed passing opportunities, which could prove costly against a seasoned team like Munster.

The Bulls are set to enjoy a week's rest courtesy of the EPCR finals, with several key players attending the Springbok alignment camp during this break. Ackermann hopes to leverage the home advantage in the upcoming clash. “It’s always nice to play at home and hopefully we can use that to our advantage,” he said, fully aware of the formidable challenge posed by Munster. “Munster are a quality side with a lot of good internationals. We know we’ll have to lift our standards.”

As the Bulls gear up for what promises to be a thrilling quarter-final, the focus is clear: cut out the errors, tighten up the attack, and be ruthless in execution. Only then can they hope to topple the defending champions and advance in the URC playoffs.
