The curtain has fallen on David Kriel's tenure with the Vodacom Bulls, following a severe achilles injury that necessitated surgical intervention earlier this week. Bulls coach Johan Ackermann broke the news, marking an end to Kriel's season and, subsequently, his time with the team.
“David is unfortunately finished for the season,” Ackermann revealed, just before the team's upcoming clash against Benetton at Loftus Versfeld. “It was quite a serious achilles injury. He had surgery on Wednesday and he’s on the road to recovery now, but he’ll be out for a couple of months.” This injury not only sidelines Kriel for the remainder of the season but also wraps up his career with the Bulls as he is set to move to La Rochelle post-season. His last play with the Bulls saw him in the fullback position against the Scarlets late in April.
"David is unfortunately finished for the season."
While Kriel's situation has been a tough pill to swallow, the Bulls are also grappling with another setback concerning wing Cheswill Jooste. Jooste's season has been marred by injuries, the latest being a hamstring issue. “On tour he played, then picked up a light ankle injury, then played again against the Scarlets, and against Zebre he pulled his hamstring,” Ackermann detailed. Currently in his first week of recovery, Jooste faces a four-week downtime, which puts his return, contingent on the team reaching the finals.
"One thing about Cheswill is he is very committed to his rehab and he recovers quickly."
Ackermann praised Jooste's dedication to his rehabilitation, noting his swift recovery from previous injuries. Jooste’s predicament also throws a wrench into his participation with the Junior Boks at the upcoming Junior World Championship, with his involvement hinging on the team's immediate injury status and playoff prospects.
The Bulls are set to reassess Jooste's situation post the Benetton game, which could potentially alter his Junior Bok camp commitments. If Jooste can join the camp later, Ackermann feels confident he'll integrate seamlessly.
TEAM: Pollard back at 10 as Nortjé returns to lead Bulls.
