As the 2026 international rugby season approaches, All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has finalized his management team, reintroducing some familiar faces to the fold. Gilbert Enoka, celebrated for his pivotal role in New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2011 and 2015, rejoins as the Leadership and Mental Performance Coach. Alongside him, Dr. James McGarvey returns as the Team Doctor, renewing a professional relationship with Rennie that dates back over a decade.
Gilbert Enoka, who departed from New Zealand Rugby after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, brings a wealth of experience back to the team. His expertise has been sought after globally, having worked with the England cricket team, the New South Wales State of Origin side, and even a stint at Chelsea in the English Premier League. Former head coach Sir Steve Hansen once lauded him as the "secret ingredient in a golden era" for the All Blacks, highlighting the critical role he played during his previous tenure.
"We are excited to welcome Gilbert Enoka back into the All Blacks. With two intense seasons ahead of us, including this year’s extended tour of South Africa and the 2027 Rugby World Cup, we believe the experience, deep understanding of the environment, and connection that Gilbert brings will be of huge value,"
Rennie remarked.
Dr. James McGarvey, who served as the All Blacks Team Doctor from 2020 to 2023, also re-enters the fray. His past collaborations with Rennie include their time together with the New Zealand Under 20s and the Chiefs. "I know that James will transition seamlessly into the group because he already knows the role, the environment, and me as a Head Coach," Rennie commented, underscoring the smooth reintegration expected with McGarvey’s return.
The reshuffle also sees the departure of Dr. Ceri Evans and Dr. Martin Swan. Rennie expressed his gratitude towards Dr. Evans, acknowledging his "significant legacy" in enhancing the team's performance under pressure. Steve Lancaster, New Zealand Rugby’s Interim CEO, echoed these sentiments. "We’ve been fortunate to tap into his knowledge to help the All Blacks perform under pressure, including his well-known Red Blue mind model," Lancaster noted, also thanking Dr. Swan for his contributions focused on holistic wellbeing.
The reintegration of Enoka and McGarvey into the All Blacks setup is a strategic move by Rennie, aiming to blend historical success with contemporary strategy as they gear up for the challenges ahead. Their return is not just a nod to past triumphs but a forward-looking measure designed to steer the team through upcoming rigorous campaigns.
