Sharks' coach JP Pietersen dropped a bombshell this week, confirming that Springbok sensation Ethan Hooker is set for surgery following his shoulder dislocation. With the Sharks preparing to face Edinburgh this Friday, the timing is less than ideal, and the details surrounding Hooker's return remain murky. “He’s seen the surgeon, but I can’t give an exact timeline,” Pietersen shared. “He’ll probably go for surgery this week, and then we’ll know more once they’ve opened up the shoulder.”

The incident that led to Hooker's injury occurred during a clash with the Ospreys, stirring up controversy and leaving the team grappling with the referee's decisions. Pietersen revealed the team's resigned acceptance of the situation.

“We had a conversation with the head of referees,” Pietersen said. “It is what it is. It’s out of my control. It’s for the referees to decide.”

This injury throws a wrench in Hooker's season, potentially sidelining him for three to four months, or even longer if complications arise. This puts his participation in the upcoming Test season with the Springboks in serious jeopardy.

The aftermath of the Ospreys game also raised eyebrows concerning the use of uncontested scrums, which arguably stripped the Sharks of a critical advantage. “To be honest, that is a question mark. We don’t know, did [the prop] get injured or were the Ospreys taking the contest away from us?” questioned Pietersen earlier. However, a subsequent review meeting with the URC seemed to have provided some clarity. “They investigated it and gave us feedback. We asked our questions, we got answers, and now we move on,” Pietersen stated on Thursday.

Amidst these challenges, there's a silver lining as Siya Kolisi returns to the Sharks lineup, taking on a new role, alongside André the Giant, adding some much-needed firepower and experience to the squad. As the Sharks gear up for their next encounter, the team dynamics and strategy will undoubtedly be under scrutiny, as they navigate through these turbulent waters.
