Following Leinster's narrow victory over Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup semi-final, which ended 29-25, the aftermath has been anything but quiet. Leinster's head coach, Leo Cullen, a former teammate of Luke Fitzgerald at both Leinster and Ireland, vehemently criticized the media's negative portrayal of his team. Despite leading Leinster to their fourth final in five years, Fitzgerald believes Cullen's focus might be misplaced.

Fitzgerald, who has been vocal on "The Left Wing" podcast, expressed his concerns about Cullen's approach to media scrutiny. "Not going to apologise for calling it like I see it; he [Cullen] is wasting his time getting concerned what people are talking about," Fitzgerald remarked. He suggested that instead of inflaming media relations, Cullen should be managing them more discreetly, potentially fostering a 'siege mentality' within the team.

"You let that kind of mindset seep in that it’s an achievement. I just disagree with him on that. The achievement is in winning. You’re there for the gold medal and I just fundamentally disagree with it [the reaching the final is great mindset]..."

Fitzgerald also touched on the strategic aspects of team preparation, noting the constraints imposed by the IRFU on player selection, which differs significantly from the practices of French and English clubs. This management has led to a rotation policy that saw Leinster fielding a considerably altered lineup in recent league matches, which Fitzgerald believes could impact their performance.

Discussing selection choices, Fitzgerald highlighted the decision to opt for Sam Prendergast over Ciaran Frawley as a backup for Harry Byrne in the semi-final against Toulon as a critical error. "It looks to me from the way they selected the bench that it sounded like they were trying to keep Prendergast happy, which isn’t a good idea for him, it’s not a good idea for the team either which is most important," he explained.

Despite the criticism, the resilience of players like Byrne was noted, with Fitzgerald acknowledging that the pressures of the semi-final, marked by Byrne's kicking errors, could serve as a valuable learning experience. "He will settle down, he will be better for that experience at the weekend, they got through it, which is the main thing for someone like him," Fitzgerald said, highlighting the growth potential from such high-pressure situations.

As Leinster prepares for the final against Bordeaux, the discussions around their strategy and media engagement underscore the high stakes and intense scrutiny at the pinnacle of European rugby. Fitzgerald's insights not only shed light on the inner workings of team dynamics but also remind us of the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines champions.
