When Johan Mulder, the South African scrumhalf, landed in Cardiff, expectations weren't sky-high. Fast forward to 2026, and he's not just exceeded those expectations, he's shattered them. From a third-choice No 9 to a linchpin of the squad, Mulder's 33 appearances have been nothing short of transformative for both his career and Cardiff's ambitions. Now, as Cardiff stands on the brink of their first-ever Vodacom URC playoff appearance, Mulder faces a poignant showdown against the Stormers—his homeland's warriors—where a win would catapult his team into the top eight.

Mulder's journey to Cardiff was as unexpected as it was fateful. "I was actually shocked when they showed interest in me. I didn’t think a team like that would even consider me," Mulder revealed. The move was a leap into the prestigious, a club woven with the fabric of rugby legends. "It’s a really prestigious club with a lot of history... So, it was an easy choice for me. Coming here was a massive honour."

"It’s been incredible. My game has really developed here,"

Mulder expressed, reflecting on his growth. The transition from the sunny climes of South Africa to the unpredictable Welsh weather forced an evolution in his play—less running, more tactical kicking, and a newfound appreciation for game management.

A setback came in November when a training injury led to a broken jaw and a month out of action. Yet, Mulder bounced back with aplomb, quickly reclaiming his spot and impressing with his sharp instincts and robust defence. "I am trying my hardest to just keep on building on my performances and be the best that I can for the team and keep on growing as a player and learn from the other guys," he stated, committed to continuous improvement.

Off the pitch, life in Cardiff has gifted Mulder his most cherished moment—becoming a father to baby Lana in March, a milestone that he describes as "probably the best feeling in my life so far."

With the playoff spot within grasp and the Stormers coming to town, Mulder is buzzing with anticipation. "I think the vibe will be amazing, running out at the Arms Park with a full crowd. I am really looking forward to it," he said, eyes firmly set on making history. As Cardiff gears up for this monumental clash, the stakes couldn't be higher, and for Mulder, it's not just a game—it's a full-circle moment against a backdrop of personal and professional triumphs.
