When Johan Mulder, the South African scrum-half, made the move to Cardiff Rugby in the summer of 2024, expectations were modest. Initially perceived as the third-choice for his position, Mulder has since defied odds, notching up 33 appearances over two seasons and becoming a linchpin for his team. As Cardiff stands on the cusp of a historic entry into the United Rugby Championship play-offs, Mulder faces a poignant matchup against the Stormers, his compatriots, in a decisive game that could seal the deal for his adopted club.

Mulder's journey to Cardiff was as unexpected as it has been fruitful. "I was actually shocked when they showed interest in me. I didn’t think a team like that would even consider me," he shared. His humility, juxtaposed with his rapid ascent at Cardiff, underscores a story of unexpected success and the embracing of new challenges.

"It’s a really prestigious club with a lot of history. There are legends of the game that have played here. So, it was an easy choice for me. Coming here was a massive honour."

Adapting to the Welsh climate and playing style was no small feat for someone accustomed to the South African sunshine and a more straightforward, run-heavy game. The transition demanded a strategic shift towards a kicking and control game, a change that Mulder credits for his growth. "At the beginning of last season, I may have forced a few things, but I feel calmer and more confident now. I have learned a whole lot in terms of understanding how to control the game, when to make better decisions," he explained.

Despite a challenging period last November when a training injury led to a broken jaw and a stint away from the field, Mulder has bounced back with resilience. His return was marked by enhanced performances, showcasing his improved tactical kicking, defensive prowess, and instinctual play, including his work over the ball.

"I am trying my hardest to just keep on building on my performances and be the best that I can for the team and keep on growing as a player and learn from the other guys," Mulder stated, reflecting his commitment to continuous improvement and team ethos.

Off the field, Cardiff has become more than just a place to play rugby for Mulder; it's become home. This sentiment was deepened with the birth of his first child, a daughter, in March, marking a profound personal milestone. "It was probably the best feeling in my life so far. I am really excited for the new journey," he expressed, his voice imbued with the joy of fatherhood.

As Cardiff prepares to host the Stormers, the anticipation is palpable. Mulder is not just playing for a win but for a place in history. "The vibe will be amazing, running out at the Arms Park with a full crowd. I am really looking forward to it," he concluded, his focus now as much on the legacy he helps to create as the game at hand.
