Leinster's team selection for the upcoming United Rugby Championship quarter-final has sparked considerable debate among its fanbase, particularly concerning the exclusion of Ciaran Frawley. Despite a standout performance in Leinster's recent defeat to Bordeaux-Begles, where Frawley's second-half presence was a silver lining in a 41-19 loss, head coach Leo Cullen has opted to leave him out of the matchday squad entirely.

Frawley's omission came as a shock to many, especially since the dynamic playmaker is set to join Connacht next season and had not started at fly-half throughout this campaign. The decision has not sat well with supporters, with one expressing discontent on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, stating,

"A manager’s job is to pick the best players for the team. Frawley was the standout player for Leinster last week and to not even to have him in the 23 is both spineless and spiteful."

This sentiment was echoed under Leinster’s team announcement post, with fans voicing their frustration and confusion over the coaching strategy.

The controversy reached Leo Cullen during his press conference, where he defended his choice by highlighting the potential and current form of Sam Prendergast, who has been selected to start at fly-half. Cullen praised Prendergast's capabilities, noting,

"Sam, as you know, he’s a super talented young man and we want to keep giving the guy opportunities. He already has multiple Irish caps under his belt so it’s not just us as coaches here who think the guy has unbelievable amount of potential. It’s the Irish coaches as well."

Cullen further explained that the selection was about balancing the team and providing fresh opportunities. "It’s always a balance and we’re lucky with the guys that we have there," he added. The coach emphasized the importance of supporting whoever is picked, stating, "Whatever team gets picked in any week, we get behind the group and we give them every single chance to fire and be as good as they can possibly be."

With Sam Prendergast at fly-half and Harry Byrne, who started the previous match in Bilbao, on the bench, the stage is set for a compelling encounter. As the team gears up for the quarter-final, the focus now shifts to how these decisions will translate on the field, with the Leinster community closely watching how these strategic choices unfold in the heat of competition.
