Wikus van Heerden, a former powerhouse for both the Lions and Bulls, is buzzing with excitement as the Lions carve their path back to rugby prominence with a stellar Vodacom URC campaign. Currently positioned fifth, the Lions are on the brink of clinching a top-eight spot and their inaugural URC playoff appearance as they prepare to face off against Munster in Limerick.

The resurgence of the Lions has not only sparked enthusiasm among their ardent supporters but has also reignited a sense of pride within the club. "It’s great to see the Lions at that level again, especially given their glorious history. It’s something that excites any supporter or former player of the Lions," Van Heerden shared with Netwerk24.

"Yes, they make mistakes here and there at critical moments,"

Van Heerden noted, reflecting some frustration. However, he quickly pointed to the positives, emphasizing the growth and maturity burgeoning within the team.

"But the younger players are seizing the opportunities they get, and that shows me growth is taking place. There is a maturity in the team,"

he added.

This season has been marked by some remarkable performances by the Lions, including a thunderous 54-17 triumph over the Glasgow Warriors, who were leading the log at the time. Such victories are not just about points on the board; they play a crucial role in luring fans back to Ellis Park—a venue hungry for the roars of a bustling crowd after a stint of mediocrity.

Van Heerden highlighted the social and communal aspects that drive spectators to games. “Supporters want to go watch the rugby on a weekend, perhaps enjoy a beer with friends and brag about their team. It’s important that a team delivers good results. You must be successful to attract spectators,” he explained.

As the Lions prepare for their do-or-die clash with Munster, the stakes couldn't be higher. But with their recent form and the palpable excitement around their resurgence, the Lions are not just playing to win; they're playing to roar back into the heart of rugby prestige.
