During a candid hour-long interview in a Galway pub with former England players Ben Youngs and Dan Cole, Mack Hansen, the Connacht winger, shared some of the lighter moments from the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour and his experiences within the Ireland squad. The 28-year-old, who is currently recuperating from foot surgery, offered an amusing glimpse into the camaraderie and off-field antics that bond rugby teams together.

The conversation, which was as revealing as it was humorous, touched on a particularly memorable incident involving Hansen and England prop Ellis Genge. "I was fully nude getting manhandled by Ellis Genge… It’s honestly haunts me to this day," Hansen recounted with a laugh. He described the initiation as being "worn like a glove," a moment of vulnerability that was provoked by his own playful taunts.

"You obviously think he is a d***head in your head, and then you meet him and yeah, he is still a d***head, but you love him."

Hansen also delved into the dynamics of the Ireland team, particularly when socializing with beverages. He shared insights into head coach Andy Farrell's lighter side, revealing, "Once I've had a few, I always gravitate to Faz. If anything, you can say it’s Faz’s Achilles heel. Not like he is a bad drunk, but once he has a few, he gets a bit sloppy from time to time."

Assistant coach John Fogarty was hailed as the 'King of Craic', with Hansen admiring his ability to lift spirits and energize the team. "He just comes out with these crazy stories, first of all, but then his jokes and his comedic timing," Hansen explained, underscoring the importance of humor in building team cohesion.

When it comes to drinking prowess, hooker Dan Sheehan was mentioned as a notable contender, capable of impressing with his speed and stamina. The familial trait of handling drinks was humorously highlighted during a World Rugby Awards event, where Dan's father outpaced Hansen significantly in beer consumption.

The interview wasn't just about off-field exploits; Hansen also reflected on the intense rivalries that flare up on the pitch, particularly against teams like South Africa and Scotland. "It does then become so personal... you despise them and you’re like, ‘These are some of the worst people in the world at this moment… I honestly hate their guts’ and then once it’s finished, it’s done," he said, emphasizing how personal the game becomes at the international level.

This blend of camaraderie, competition, and the occasional comedic escapade paints a rich picture of rugby culture as seen through the eyes of Mack Hansen, offering fans a glimpse into the human side of this demanding sport.
