The debate on whether England's rugby captain Maro Itoje should take a summer break has been ignited by former England stars, with the looming Rugby World Cup adding weight to their argument. As England prepares to face formidable opponents in the Nations Championship, including South Africa, the consideration to rest Itoje, who has been significantly taxed by his commitments at both club and international levels, has become a focal point.

Ben Youngs, a former scrum-half, voiced his thoughts on the "For the Love of Rugby" podcast, emphasizing the importance of timing in giving Itoje a respite. "You think about the Lions tour and the load that he’s had not only as an England player but also as a Saracen and a Lion, there’ll be a lot of, ‘Oh, you’re losing that experience’ but one thing it gives other people an opportunity," Youngs explained. He highlighted the potential for other players like George Martin and Ollie Chessum, who have both shown promise, to step up in Itoje's absence.

"You’ve got George Martin who’s now fit again, who has missed a bucketload of rugby, so he can slot in. You’ve got Ollie Chessum who is doing a great job in captaining Leicester Tigers this season; he could potentially come, and I’d love to see him maybe given the opportunity to captain England."

Chris Robshaw, another former England captain, concurred with Youngs, suggesting that the decision to rest Itoje might need to be enforced rather than offered. Reflecting on his own experiences, Robshaw discussed the physical and emotional toll that leadership can exact, especially following personal challenges such as the loss of a loved one. "I think the other thing that people probably don’t take into account is Maro hasn’t only played for these teams; he has captained them," Robshaw said on the podcast.

The discussion also touched on England's broader strategy heading into the World Cup, with the summer tests seen as a crucial period for testing squad depth and leadership capabilities. Dan Cole, joining the conversation, supported the notion of resting Itoje, suggesting that England's performance at Ellis Park could serve as a litmus test for the team's resilience and adaptability without their captain.

"Look, no one wants to be rested, especially if you’re captain, and it’s that other thing where you give someone else an opportunity, but as you said, someone needs to make that call for him and say, ‘You know what, this is the right thing for you. This is the right thing for England.’"

The consensus among these seasoned players highlights a strategic decision-making process that balances individual welfare with team needs, a testament to the complex dynamics at play in elite sports. As England navigates the challenges of the Nations Championship and looks towards the World Cup, the management of key players like Maro Itoje will undoubtedly be pivotal in their quest for success.
