Just when Cardiff needed all hands on deck for their crucial Vodacom URC showdown with the Stormers this Friday at the Arms Park, they're forced to soldier on without veteran lock Josh McNally. The Royal Air Force has requisitioned McNally for duty, pulling him into the Inter Service Championship finale against the British Army, slated for Saturday at Kingsholm. The timing couldn’t be worse for Cardiff.

McNally isn't just any player; he's a seasoned weapons engineer with the RAF and a key figure in their elite athlete programme, balancing his military commitments with professional rugby. This programme stipulates his participation in annual matches against military teams, which this time, unfortunately, clashes with his club's critical fixture.

Cardiff’s coach, Corniel van Zyl, faces a real test of his squad’s depth. "Josh’s absence is a significant loss for us, especially in such a key game," Van Zyl lamented. With McNally sidelined, Cardiff's options in the second row are thin, leaving Rory Thornton and George Nott to step up.

"We’re in a tough spot, but we’ll just have to close ranks and focus on the task at hand," Van Zyl added.

Adding to Van Zyl’s headaches are the fitness doubts over flanker Alex Mann and winger Josh Adams, the latter still reeling from a head injury assessment fail against Glasgow. Lock Teddy Williams is also out of the picture, sidelined for months.

Despite these setbacks, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Cardiff. Currently seventh in the URC table, a victory over the already quarter-final bound Stormers could secure them a playoff spot. The Stormers, on the other hand, aren't just showing up to fulfill fixtures; they're eyeing a top-two finish to solidify their championship aspirations.

As the teams gear up for what promises to be a heated encounter, Cardiff knows all too well that every pass, tackle, and try counts more than ever. With or without McNally, Friday’s clash at the Arms Park is set to be a blockbuster.
