Is there a new king in the realm of rugby flyhalves? Former England flyhalf Stuart Barnes has stirred the pot by suggesting that South Africa's Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu could eclipse legendary Dan Carter and even outshine the current rugby luminary, Antoine Dupont. Feinberg-Mngomezulu, at just 24, has shown prodigious talent since his explosive entry in the 2024 test season, securing his spot as the Springboks' preferred No 10 despite recent performance hiccups with the Stormers.

Barnes, in his recent column for the UK Sunday Times, didn't hold back on his predictions. "He’s not perfect but along with Matthieu Jalibert, he is the most exciting flyhalf in the world," Barnes stated. This was evident in Feinberg-Mngomezulu's recent showcase during the Stormers' thrilling 38-38 draw against Ulster in Belfast, where he not only scored two tries but also contributed an additional 11 points with his boot.

The performance in Belfast left many in awe, especially when "the Stormers flyhalf dropped deep and accelerated onto a pass a few meters from the breakdown, there was no stopping him," according to Barnes. His ability to identify and exploit gaps with such finesse has set him apart as a potential successor to Dupont's throne as rugby's most recognizable face.

"Who cares about a fluffed drop goal when a flyhalf can do so much damage?"

Barnes further highlighted that the core duty of a flyhalf is to lead and invigorate the team, a role Feinberg-Mngomezulu seems to have mastered effortlessly, making complex plays look like a walk in the park. His prowess and marketability could very well make him the face of rugby by the time the 2027 World Cup rolls around, particularly as his contract with the Stormers is due to expire that same year.

Comparisons with rugby greats are inevitable as Feinberg-Mngomezulu continues to dazzle on the international stage, with Barnes boldly claiming, "This flyhalf, barring the unfortunate, is the next Dan Carter; quicker, maybe better." Rugby fans, especially in England, are advised to brace themselves for a barrage of headlines as South Africa tours in July. The stage is set, and the rugby world is watching closely.
