Former Springbok No. 8 Shaun Sowerby, now orchestrating Bordeaux Bègles' lineout strategies, has pinpointed Cameron Woki as a key figure in the team's quest to defend their Investec Champions Cup title. With a crucial quarter-final clash against Toulouse on the horizon, Bordeaux is riding high after demolishing Leicester Tigers 64-14 in a dazzling display of their championship mettle.
During a chat on the club’s YouTube channel, Sowerby expressed his admiration for Woki's dual-threat capability.
"Cameron has certainly helped us. He is an excellent player in the line out and one of the best on the counter-attack that I’ve been able to coach,"
Sowerby explained. Woki's prowess in set pieces and open play has injected a dynamic edge into Bordeaux’s game, enhancing their bid for consecutive European crowns.
However, despite their European success, Sowerby acknowledged that Bordeaux is still fine-tuning their overall gameplay, especially after a rocky start in the French Top 14. "For us, last season was very successful and there’s always this feeling that we still need to find that dynamic that allows us to play a balanced game at the right level all the time," he confessed.
Turning his attention to international rugby, Sowerby also weighed in on the Springboks' preparations for the upcoming World Cup. He commended the groundwork laid by the two-time World Champions but suggested patience in expecting prolonged dominance akin to New Zealand's historical success.
"There’s been a lot of good work done for several consecutive years. The fact that they’re two-time World Champions means this team deserves to be talked about... Compared to the All Blacks, who’ve built a success rate and winning rate of over 90 percent. So for me, we maybe have to wait a little bit longer to see if they can sustain their winning form for that long,"
Sowerby reflected.
As Bordeaux gears up to continue their Champions Cup defense, all eyes will be on how Woki and his teammates rise to the occasion against the formidable Toulouse, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.
