The end of an era looms for the Vodacom Bulls as towering Springbok lock Ruan Nortjé prepares to exit stage left, bound for Japan, post the current season. The club, amidst a tinge of melancholy, confirmed the looming departure of this stalwart, who has anchored their pack since his first cap in 2018.

At 27, Nortjé has worn the Bulls jersey in 146 battles, teetering on the edge of a 150-game milestone with a few matches yet to play. His journey at Loftus Versfeld, marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence, has not only earned him a Springbok badge in 2022 but also the respect of peers and foes alike across 18 Test appearances.

Nortjé's tenure as captain in 37 outings underscores his leadership, pivotal in nurturing emerging talents within the Bulls’ ranks. The decision to uproot, as confessed by Nortjé, was marred with difficulty.

"Playing for the Bulls was a dream come true. I would have been happy with one game, so to get close to 150 is something I never imagined,"

he reflected, attributing his resolve to familial priorities.

The resonance of Loftus Versfeld’s roar will linger as a career highlight for Nortjé, whose imminent departure invokes both support and sentimental farewells from the Bulls' camp. Johan Ackermann, the Bulls coach, lauded Nortjé’s commitment.

"He’s given almost 10 years to this union and has been the heart of the team. Sometimes a new challenge is the right step, and we fully support him and his family. His leadership and professionalism have been outstanding,"

Ackermann remarked.

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone mirrored this sentiment, celebrating Nortjé as a symbol of the club's ethos—commitment, humility, and pride. "While we’re sad to see him go, we support his decision and thank him for his incredible service," Rathbone commented, encapsulating the bittersweet nature of Nortjé's departure.

As the curtains draw on Nortjé's illustrious chapter with the Bulls, his legacy of leadership and resilience is poised to endure, influencing generations at Loftus Versfeld long after his departure.
