In a week fraught with injury scares and illnesses, the Stormers' squad breathes a collective sigh of relief as key players are declared fit for the upcoming Vodacom URC quarter-final against Cardiff. The intense training sessions leading up to Saturday's game left several players sidelined, casting a shadow over the team's preparation, but Stormers coach John Dobson now reports a near-full roster.

The week's tension peaked when Damian Willemse and Leolin Zas were involved in a heavy collision, leaving both players grounded and the coaching staff bracing for the worst. Dobson recounted the perilous moment, "On Wednesday we were looking at possibly minus five if you looked at Evan [Roos], Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who was ill], obviously the Damian-Zas situation, and then BJ [Ben-Jason Dixon] also had a neck referral." He added,

“Those things are terrible because it’s not like a normal knock. It could be something serious. So it’s a massive relief. Given where we were on Wednesday afternoon, it’s a big, big relief.”

Fortunes turned as the team welcomed back Ruhan Nel, Seabelo Senatla, and Ruan Ackermann, boosting the squad's morale and capabilities. Dobson expressed confidence in their return, particularly highlighting Senatla's robust athleticism: "Seanatla is a supreme athlete, just sinew and muscle and hardness, and he is always covering ground."

The strategic formation for the game includes a 6-2 split on the bench, with Dobson noting Ackermann's potential to provide a powerful late-game push. He reassured the flexibility of his backline options, stating, "If one of the backs goes down early we have got Damian who can play everywhere. Jurie can go to No 10 and Sacha can go anywhere. Immy [scrumhalf Imad Khan] is very comfortable on the wing, so it gives us a little bit of cover."

Earlier comments by Dobson about Cardiff being the "easiest" quarter-final challenge were clarified. Captain Ruhan Nel explained the advantage of having recently played Cardiff, easing their preparation.

"It’s a lot easier in terms of analysis and your workload is not as much. By no means did we say Cardiff is an easy team. They beat us and rightly so. They were way better than us. It is just from a workload point of view, the players already have a picture in mind. You don’t have to spend as many hours on prep as you would have done if you had faced the team in round three in the URC. It’s great because the memory is still fresh from playing them.”

The Stormers' readiness, bolstered by the return of their key players, sets the stage for what promises to be an enthralling quarter-final clash against Cardiff.
