Wales is gearing up with a bolstered lineup as they brace for a formidable clash against the reigning world champions, the Springboks, in the Nations Championship this July. Notably, the squad sees the return of British & Irish Lions flanker Jac Morgan, who is bouncing back after a shoulder mishap sidelined him during the Six Nations. Alongside him, Gloucester's dynamic centre Max Llewellyn and Cardiff's stalwart lock Teddy Williams are also making a comeback, both having missed out on the Six Nations due to injuries.
This rejuvenated team will test their mettle on July 18 at Kings Park, facing off against the formidable South Africans. Adding to the strategic play, veteran Tomas Francis, despite his robust performance in the French second division, will be resting this season. This decision is part of a broader vision to keep him fresh for the upcoming 2027 World Cup in Australia.
Prior to their Nations Championship engagements, Wales will warm up with a non-cap international against the Barbarians at Twickenham on June 27. Post this, Coach Steve Tandy plans to streamline his squad for the upcoming matches against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa.
"The reason for the extended squad is there’s a lot of staggering. Some players will finish next weekend and then some might not come into the squad until June 27,"
explained Tandy. He further emphasized the summer's objectives,
"The priorities for us this summer are to keep growing the players, get them up to speed with the conditioning element and also skill development."
After snapping a three-year drought and a 15-game losing streak in the Six Nations with a victory over Italy this March, Wales is keen to build on their momentum. The return of seasoned players coupled with fresh strategies by Tandy could spell a turning point for the Welsh squad as they eye more robust performances on the international stage.
