The following from News24:-

"Australian skipper Steve Smith and opener David Warner have been banned for 12 months for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked the third Test against the Proteas at Newlands last weekend.

Warner's fellow opener, Cameron Bancroft, has been banned for nine months for his role in attempting to alter the state of the ball in the Proteas' second innings.

All three players will have the right to challenge their verdicts and also the duration of their penalties via a CA code of behaviour hearing with an independent commissioner.

In addition, both Smith and Warner have been barred from captaining Australia for a period of two years.

The Proteas went on to win the Test by 322-runs and take a 2-1 series lead into the fourth and final Test at the Wanderers starting on Friday, March 30.

The bans would still enable all three guilty parties to play in next year's Cricket World Cup in England which starts on May 30.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine will take over as captain at the Wanderers.

Smith, Warner and Bancroft are due to board a flight back to Australia later on Wednesday."
This is worse than I thought - banning Smith and Warner iro the captaincy issue is bad news for Smith - by the time he may get back the captaincy he will be 30+ years of age and another player may have by that time establish himself as captain of the team.
I am not sure Warner would get back into international cricket he has a bad discipline record and is also getting on in age.
Both Warner and Smith - who already resigned  as captains of their respective teams will now be out of the IPL even if they do appeal their banning lengths.   These two te ams will now have an option to buy extra foreign players and most of the better crowd has already been contracted.  Good chance that Markram would be in contention.

Mike, are you sure the banning will be imposed by the IPL too? Remember, this is a CA sanction, the ICC banned Smith for only 1 match. They might even be able to go play some county cricket in England , not?

The IPL teams would be mad to take on board two players from Outside of India who have  been banned by their home structure from playing cricket in their home country,

The IPL had past problems as well.   Two years ago 2 of the 8 teams was prohibited from taking part in the competition and the teams are very careful to keep to the straight and the narrow.  There are massive amounts of money involved and any banned team would lose tens of millions.

The opposing teams have a number of SA players on their pay-roll and those teams would scream blue murder if Smith and Warner remains in their present teams.

Both Smith and Warner were captains of their respective teams and t hey were effectively fired as captains before the full investigation was completed.   A year ban would be another issue and there was not a single case where an IPL team has contracted a player bnned from playing in his home country.

I heard, thanks Mike. I wonder what the contractual position would be. The ICC is the governing body of cricket. Now questions must be asked. If both the IPL and CA deemed the offence to be worthy of a year ban, why does the ICC think a mere fine and a one match ban is sufficient?

See what I wrote about the financial losses Smith and Warner will suffer from their crooking.   They must be crying all the way to he bank.
