According to Cricket SA t hose kind of stats should not be borne ibn mind when it coemes to playing for t he Proteas, A strike rate of 165 is not needed we ca do woitha strke rate of 70 is sufficient to qualify for election - why the hell should people b e upset about such an abomination when SA Cricket thinks otherwise, It is the same with Pretorius - SA can do well witha verage batsmen that fails more than they deliver.

I am just being sarcastic about the approach of SA Cicket when it comes to cricet player selection by them wen it cmes t se;lection of players fir the Proteas team. It is harder for existing players to be dropped from the team than it is for younger players to come into the team. That is why SA cricket is in deep shit when it comes to viewwership issues.

Our Protea captain...shame... he was so out of his depth, but clearly picked to satisfy the dark collars. The Warriors debacle has really shone a spotlight on this matter.

We've been pushing for black players and giving them ample time and resources to develop. I think CSA just need to concede that after spending billions on upliftment in the rural areas... the inability to find enough black talent lies in the fact that our local squatters are much more interested in soccer and rugby. And I am at peace with that. Our rugby team is picked 100% on merit now.

Bavuma is an interesting case.

Lets seperate it in to the 3 formats:

1. Tests: No brainer. He is by far our most consistent batsman and should be the first name on the team sheet.
2. ODI's: This is tough. Emotion says... get him out. But when you look at his numbers... he averages over 40 with a strike rate of 88. Look at his batting innings list here ... and it reads a lot better that Markram and Stubbs. His SR is higher than Rassie van der Dussen! In fact, his stats are only marginally worse off that QdK who averaged 45 and had a strike rate of 96. Having spoken to a few players in December / Jan, there is a lot of time and respect for TB in the ODI team. It's a tough call here, but I'd keep him as we bring in young players like Pretorius and Brevis.
3. T20: No space for him on this bus.

Agreed with that assessment on Bavuma Chip…he is technically very sound. Not quite explosive enough for T20, he has an excellent record in ODI’s. And if you could weight averages by the importance of the match, his numbers would probably look even better. A pro.

It's crazy to think that AB played his first test at the age of 20 but that Brevis isn't a regular member of the Proteas yet.

Brevis is soon 22.

I think he's shown enough that CSA can take a big bet on him.

Stubbs, Rickleton and Brevis - All three formats for the Proteas. There's an aura around each of those chaps and the Proteas need as many auras as they can find.

My problem with Bavuma is winning culture. He's a senior member of a side that fails far too often. Personalities matter. I'm not saying he's a bad influence, but just that players can have a unintentional effect on the mindset of a team, and a batting line-up. One talks about winning culture, but assumes that winning culture is all visible. I don't believe it is. We are chemical beings. No matter how well trained and professional we are, we give off hormones, subliminal body langue cues, etc. When a guy has been in a team that has been underperforming for such a long time, then its worth considering if their over all influence net net positive. The longer a guy has been in the side that easier that determination is to make.

...and that is before wanting my top 4 to play all formats for the Proteas. I honestly believe that you pay them what you need to and you make them play as much as possible for the Proteas. Your best guys need to be facing the best bowling as often as possible.

Bavuma and wining culture.... thats a difficult one.

We went from Amla, Kallis, Smith, de Villiers and du Plessis and a few others...

to Elgar, Bavuma and not much else.

So its really difficult to comment on "Bavuma and winning culture".

Lets put him in a team that rocks like his predecessors and then we can guage / judge him.

Lets not forget that he has led us to a few global semi finals as well as the final of the test world cup (whatever they call it).

I do feel though that we are on an upward trajectory though.

Pobllem is that Bavuma bats too low strike rates a batsman to be a factor in the shorter versions of cricket - not only 2o/20 vtivkt - but also the 50/50 version.
