However, if Paine wins the toss he will be in a bad situation. Batting and Fielding will both have jet lag effects - but I guess it would be worse for the batsmen.

I disagree. I'd rather say play to our own strengths (whatever that may be) and not to the opposition weaknesses.
The pitch also needs to be taken into consideration. The wanderers is attrocious to bat on, on day 5.
