This was one of the nicest games of rugby I have seen on both sides.   There was a false note though and that relates to atrocious refereeing - both on the part of the referee - the line-judges - and the TV monitor.

There were at least four cases where according to both the commentators the referees fouled up badly:-

*   Case 1  Conrad Smith clearly knocked the ball on five meters from the Hurricanes tryline - the Hurricanes got the ball and counter-attacked and in due course scored a try.   This knock-on was so clear - the referees must have been crooked not to have seen it.

*   The Hurricanes scrums regularly disintegrated - but the penalties were not forthcoming.  One penalty early on - then a short-arm penalty to the Hurricanes and ultimately a penalty try when the scrum under the post once again in full retreat.

*   The pass to Savea when he scored the try was clearly forward - but according to the commentators awarding of the try was a dubious decision.

*   The penalizing of Jones when he went for the first try effort was a real bugger-up by the referee and especially the TV monitor - again the commentators were in agreement with that one.

Unfortunately all four went against the Stormers and that is what spoiled an otherwise entertaining game of rugby.

Mike, the commentators changed their minds on Jones' first effort and agreed he picked the ball up from an off-side position.....or did you have your TV on mute at that time?Try to give a balanced view in future.

Well said Mike must never accept these bent down under refs cheating like this.
That first one re Conrads knock on alone cost us the match and in fact may have been a 14 point swing.
Atrocious stuff but dont expect rooi ass and ab ass to agree.

A balanced view regarding NZ rugby from SA posters on a SA rugby site....more likely to meet Jesus on a stroll around K'RD.

Moola a player in a ruck picking up a ball in front of his feet is NEVER off-side.  Jones was part of the ruck coming from behind - not from the side - so he could not be off-side.
Polyboy - when other members complain about refereeing - I normally support the referee and not the complainants, but here the position was so poor that even I had to say that the refereeing was atrocious.   If the referees - three of them in fact - did not see Conrad Smith's knock-on I mentioned then one can only assume they did not want to see it.
The same also applies to the other four examples mentioned by me.  It either was deliberate or simply poor refereeing, but the constant mistakes the Stormers had to put up with - make me think it was a deliberate effort to favour the home crowd and team.
However, in all fairness lets wait for the comment of Kaplan on the refereeing - he is always fair - for instance he did not take the part of Francois Steyn when that controversy was raging.

 Brycy
I had the choice between Kerevi and De Allende as center - the latter was on my bench.  As it was I made a mistake in that case.  De Allende played the fool with Williams in the Chiefs game - same as he did with Nonu this morning.   Sorry I did not put him in - but he will definitely be in next week.
Brycy - I am soon going to trade Savea for Skudder-Milner

 @Mike.

"Moola a player in a ruck picking up a ball in front of his feet is NEVER off-side......."

Could you please quote that law as it stand in the law book?

The mongrel is wanting A QUOTE of a law about something that is common sense.  Is there a law about a no 8 disengaging from a scrum and picking up the ball behind the scrum - something which happens  twenty times a day in matches.   This was a similar occurrence -  Jones was part of the maul, he disengaged picked up the ball and dived over for a try.   Why have a law for something which is normal and part of the game - Dofdoos?

Mike that was what Justin Marshall says. Justin can be trusted to have got it right and this is what so unfairly annoys the kbbs about him.

You don't know law covers that part of play then, do you? Everything in rugby can be relayed back to a specific law. Just name the law that rules the actions that you have described. It can not ne that difficult, can it?

 Dofdoos
Balls there are no laws governing standard procedures - such  as catching a ball cleanly when passed to you, etc.  There are laws about passing balls going forward or knocking on a ball - I can go mopn endlessly on that point.  Why do you need a law for somebody who picks up a ball cleanly behind a scrum or a maul.  Go and find that in the lawbook dofdoos.
I am sick and tired of your sh!t arguments about nothing - so piss off or you find a law prohibiting an on side player from disengaging from a scrum or maul and picking up a ball.

Well, there you have it. Ou Maaikie posts a remark about being offside or not at a ruck situation and he expects us to believe that there is no law addressing that. Nice try old super snooper. Nice try. Better luck next time.

There was a lot of dodgy calls by the ref, the first was Conrad Smit, like Mike says, cases 1. Not only was it a knock on, the player was also off side and cynical and should have gotten a straight yellow.
That said, the Hurricans played some fantastic rugby.
Hats off to De Allende, really got better as the game got on.
Word must go to Nonu as well for his great touches to get the canes to break out of their 22 and then being crucial in getting the ball in the right place.
So many player mess up at that point when they make clean breaks like that.
Burger is looking great. I would shift him to 8 and move vermeulen to 7. Burger is playing a classic link role which you want from your 8.

The blowhards were severely caned in the second half. It was a complete travesty that the blowhards won this due to the bent officiating. Zero congrats are due. It was disgusting.

Hats off to the Mighty Canes as they proved that a top NZ team can win a game even when sipping margaritas and smoking cigars for the entire second half.

Give us that ref in our corner and the Stormers would win by 50.We have had a host of complaints and Mallet and Venter saying as much as they dare re the cheating down under refs.
SARU its time to earn your keep and take on the cheats

Beeno: you had the ref & his complicit crew in the Crusaders game & the result was an easy 50 points shellacking. Nope, just record it as a bad weekend for SA rugby (except for the Lions who were courageous & heroic).

Dont try and confuse the issue JW.The Stormers were robbed blind by diabolical cheating reffing. No ways would the Stormers have lost if a decent ref had controlled the game The Sharks were very poor and even without the Deysel red would have lost. I have made both these positions very clear. Crusties though should have got two reds. Very dangerosu play.
However in both the chiefs and crusties game the trouble was started by the kiwis and the whole out come has once again clearly illustrated the the double standards at play.
I will never accept this rubbish. Its disgraceful what is going on.

Well at least we agree sharks played poorly & sharks would have lost even with the Dry-cell red.
Can we also agree that the Lions were courageous & deserved their win? They showed what you can do with an underdog team that has heart.
