wonder if  Kiwis would take a deeper interest in cricket if the Black Caps were to win the WC. Over the decades we've seen some great individual cricketers emerge from the land of the long white cloud, players who could take a place amongst the greats of traditional cricketing nations and more than hold their own, here I have to pause and make mention of the great Sir Richard Hadlee, the Crowe brothers, Martin especially who we've spoken of during this WC, Danny Morrison who always gave 101% effort, the great Damien Fleming, Daniel Vettori  and lastly Shane Bond. I've been lucky enough to see all of them play. Apologies if I've missed anyone but I doubt it.

Right now the NZ team stands at the doorstep of cricketing greatness. Pound for pound they have never had a team as good as the one facing Australia.

Can they win?....in cricketing terms it's a maybe. Under normal conditions, that meaning the weather holds up I would have to conclude it's a firm, no.

About two years ago Australia were in the doldrums as far as cricket goes, Mickey Arthur got the chop, Darren Lehman came along and after a stutter and a splutter it's fair to say Australia have pulled themselves up from the socks and have arrived. Although they are not a great team as yet, the signs of an emerging great team is starting to poke it's neck.

That aside there are other factors conspiring against the Black Caps, for starters the MCG is a huge ground, probably one of crickets biggest if not the biggest, a size unfamiliar to the Black Caps. Only a fool would underestimate it's impact.

As per usual the 22 meter strip has a huge say in determining the winner, bounce will favour the Oz attack and batting moreso than the Black Caps. The Black Caps don't want to bat first.

Lastly, McCullum will have to be at his very best, a daunting task facing the likes of Starc, Hazlewood and Johnson, the best attack in the completion in my not so humble opinion( I've said so many times previously)  but if he wants to claim his place alongside of the Kiwi greats I have mentioned then he will have to  play a game changer. I don't believe he will.

Prior to the CWC I nominated 3 teams and my order was..

1) Australia

2) New Zealand

3) South Africa

I never rated India as a chance.

All things being equal I can't see the Black Caps winning and it would not surprise me at all if it's a one sided contest. NZ however can walk tall having achieved a spot in the final against more traditional cricketing nations.

For all of crickets lovers I hope I'm wrong and that it turns into an enthralling contest so that the 2015 CWC can be remembered as the greatest WC ever....that's if it already hasn't attained that status.

I'll be watching with great interest.....I hope all of NZ will as well.

GL to both teams.

yeah well we thought that when they played in pool play. Nz ended up dominanting. Theirs no reason that cant happen again. I think its 50/50. I respectively disagree other then starch. I think Nz have a stronger opening bowling attack. Boult and Souther fire early on changes things. Nz bat first mccullum and guptill fire set 350+ . Then nz have an advantage. But I dont think its as clear cut as ppl think. Its whoever wants it most on the day.

For a moment reading your post you almost had me hoping for a Kiwi win. Naaaaa come on Oz. 3ku1 NZ dominated until they had to chase that measly total and almost fell over in the home straight. I think both teams have some fragility in the batting and both will be hoping to win the toss and set a total. Both have the batters and bowlers capable of turning a match and I think it could go either way. Way down deep somewhere there is a tiny part of me that would not be too disappointed to see the Kiwis get up. But then I think that all we need as a once proud sporting nation is to be beaten by them in cricket as well as Rugby.

That's where we disagree.

Nice post Denny. I'm afraid a final in Oz given the Australian bowling attack feels pretty massive. NZ was money against the Proteas, and in some ways being the underdogs the pressure may be less. That's where NZ's  chance lies and in the belief that comes from having beaten Oz already in this WC, albeit in NZ on a more intimate ground.

Fair enough Denny, what I really should say is we should wipe the floor with NZ but I am not certain that we will.

The CWC and ODIs is one thing. Test cricket, on the other hand, is called test cricket for a reason. Having said that, I am not saying NZ will never be a major force in cricket but they have to take test cricket seriously and make it on that front to be reckoned as a major force.
Sad part is that they might soon get one threat out of the way, judging by how CSA are doing their best to destroy SA cricket, with their latest dancing to the ANC tunes.

I don't see NZ even having a chance, but I'm hoping for a hero to step up. In the end it's 50 overs a piece, so anything can happen. Go NZ!!!

Called it the way I read it, no bias, no prejudice, fair and square.

Think the Black Caps have the makings of a good ODI side even though their attack is far better than their batting but unless they improve that aspect of their game they'd be seriously handicapped. For my money they're still a one man band in McCullum and today we witnessed what happens when that trumpet does not blow.

If NZ wants to be taken seriously as a cricketing nation then they'd have to step into the Test arena where real cricket is played.
